I have been using
4.2 grain of W231
COL 1.105
precision Delta 124 gr. JHP
Any SPP I have
Any range brass I have
This gives me a velocity of 1027 out of my shield and 1097 out of my CZ 75BD
 
I use 4.1 of w231, but with a shorter OAL due to bullet shape. Mine are a coated truncated cone and actually weigh 128 grain. They clock around 1089 out of a four inch barrel.

I have tested w231 with minimum to full loads in my 3", 3.5 & 5" 9mm pistols.

The 3" will give me from 914 up with a 124gr JRN plated bullet at 1.14" OAL.
My 3.5" pistol will get from 941 up to 1044fps for its best loads.
The 5" barrel starts out at 981 and can get up to 1153fps.

All three weapons have very good accuracy with the 4.2 gr load in standard brass cases with this 124 gr bullet.

please note that the 124 gr style bullets can have a OAL form
1.075" out to a long 1.169"...........
so you do need to know what type bullet you are using, for a safe load.

You are much better off to use data from powder/bullet manufacturer's manuals. Second would be web sites from powder/bullet manufacturers. Yes, data will differ but mainly because of components being of different manufacturing lots, different equipment used for testing (age and method of testing) and personnel. If I were concerned about variations, I would choose the lowest starting loads and begin a work up there. I do not use reloading data from an anonymous screen name, ever...
 
Pet Loads :
9mm Luger - 124 grs. cast TC - NOE 358-124-TC GC - sized .357

Titegroup - 3.0 grs. @ 1103 fps.
700X - 4.1 grs. @ 1122 fps.
Red Dot - 4.2 grs. @ 1083 fps.
HP-38 / W231 - 5.0 grs. @ 1125 fps.
Unique - 5.2 grs. @ 1166 fps.
AA #2 - 5.5 grs. @ 1081 fps .

These are standard pressure, standard velocity loads worked up over the years in 4 various 9mm Luger pistols , from a WWII Walther P38 to a new Springfield Armory XD Elite ... 100% functioning with these loads and good accuracy . These are not +P loads .
They have worked well for me ... verify with a published source(s)

V.V. website does list loads for N320 with a 124 gr FMJ RN from 3.4 to 4.0 gr. I know everyone says start low and work up. I have found when loading for semi-auto pistols that starting at the lowest load gives you bullets with not enough oomph to cycle the slide reliably. For this particular one, I'd probably start at 3.6 and work up.

I love W231 for 9mm. I shoot a powder coated 120gr cast TC. The most accurate load I've found for that is 4.0 gr of W231.

As always, check the loads for yourself.
 
I have always used 5.1 grins of 231 with the 124/125 jacketed projectiles.

I know it is on the upper end, but one of my 6" guns does not like the weaker loadings and I won't load something that can not work in all of my guns

In my test..........
that is my "Maximum" load of powder with w231 powder with a 124hr bullet
with a short OAL of 1.12" , in my pistols.

If loading a 124 gr shorter, you need to work up to that load.....
since there is data out there with very short OAL lengths that could
make pressures too high, to be safe in your pistol !!
 
5.9 grains of BE-86. with an 124 fmj bullet. It delivers 1186fps from the 4.9 inch barrel of a Beretta 92. Drop to 5.6 grains with a cast bullet.
 
Well, except...

Hodgdon website - 231/HP38 is there 124 gr FMJ

...that it is a plated 124gr HBRN-TP.

Which, really begs my point. As Nevada Ed has said, the OALs for the various 124 & 125gr bullets that will work (and by "work" I mean safely & reliably load, chamber, fire and eject) in your various semi-automatic pistols is the 1st thing one needs to determine: if you want a load to work in ALL your applications you need to find the MOST restrictive (limiting?) firearm and THEN work up the powder amount to your goal. Short OALs definitely can increase pressure when approaching MAXIMUM loads.

Whether that goal is in velocity or accuracy is up to you: it may be a combination of the two. For targets at 50 feet velocity can often be reduced to improve accuracy. If you are looking to develop a SD load where velocity is important for expansion, however, accuracy at 7-10 yards may suffice.

Obviously the more firearms you have of the same caliber can make this process quite involved. For some this is the absolute BANE:eek: of reloading: for others it is both the challenge and the FUN!:D

P.S. Somewhere around 4.6gr WIN231 (or Bullseye, BTW) has worked for me for many different bullets in the 124-125gr range.
 
I’ve had good results with 124gr Gold dot HP over 4.6gr of W231.
COAL 1.10, 1030fps out of 3 inch barrels

Most any name brand case
4.4gr W231/HP-38
1.090" OAL

I have also loaded a 124 FMJ at 1.09" oal in my 5" pistol.
While accuracy was ok, it did loose 61fps with a max load of HS-6 & BE86 powder, for some odd reason.

A short OAL is a good way to get the most out of w231 for fps....
if the load is safe in your pistol.

Some stated loading a Gold Dot at 1.10" OAL.

In my C9 3.5" 9mm pistol, a 1.08 & 1.13" oal showed me failures to eject. which is not a good thing for a SD load.
The factory 1.12" has worked for me in all my pistols......

However the 124 gr. "HAP" style jhp bullet works great in my pistols with a oal of 1.075".
 
My std 9mm load for a long time was 3.5grs of Titegroup using a 124 gr plated . Even though titegroup is a very dense powder so it takes just a little for the proper amount , in that little 9mm case , a double charge was very evident , visually . I didn't have the highest velocity , but it was just a 9mm , so didn't really matter .
