I was enjoying the thread Random Object Photographs and did not have any thing to add so I thought I would start one on old time family photos. If you know the story of the picture please add it.

I will start with these two, the first is my Great Grandparents Samuel Oliver and Martha Ann (Cook) Mills of Egeria West Virginia. Family history is that Sam liked his liquor and was a regular guest of the local Sheriff. Nancy was married to the Sheriff and provided the meals to the jail. Apparently they fell in love and she divorced the Sheriff and married Sam.

The second is of my brother and I (on the right) with our Peace Makers and double gun rigs. It was taken in Munich, Christmas morning 1966.

Interesting idea for a thread. One thing I'd like to mention to everyone, is that if you have old photos, please write names and dates on the back...for the benefit of future generations. I was handed down an old velour photo binder full of 19th Century photos with tintypes, Ambrotypes and the like, but unfortunately, most have no information written on them. So I haven't a clue as to who's who. That's a shame because I have a really well documented family history from the 1800's but I can't match up the photos with my ancestors. Vague things like "Uncle Bob" are virtually worthless with photos over 100 years old. I recently forced my own parents to sit down with drawers full of old photos and identify everyone they could. IMHO once that information is lost, an image of a person becomes worthless.

I spent a week with my Father going thru all of our family photographs and writing down the stories of the pictures and those in them. He remembers every single one them.

I agree, I have pictures of past family generations, and the photo are all strangers to me, with knowledge they are relatives, mother told me about, but not thing on the back saying Aunt, Uncle or Cousins, there just strangers, and hate to throw them away cause they are family, who side, don't know, and my cousin's all have the same pictures all say same thing, who are these people.
I have to say I did the same thing with family photo's, but I know who they are, I took the pictures, and know who they are, but going to start going though the albums writing who they all are to our family since most of them are all gone.

My avatar is my grandfather decked out in German shooting medals from 1912, the second is my father, the baby, my grandmother and all my uncles from 1915 and the third the picture of the golfer is me circa 1967. Tough lie isn't it, she just won't cooperate.

I don't have a single picture from way back on my dad's side, but have massive amounts from my moms side.

This is my great great grand dad on my grand dad's side of the family. His brother Elisha Allen on the right shot and killed the Sheriff of Liberty KY on 8-2-86..some web sits have the date 1866. It's hard to take a picture of a picture with a curved glass.

My great grand parents on my grandma's side. They made their money due to prohibition.

My grand dad's folks. Got to spend a lot of time with them. Spent many hours as a kid sitting on their front porch listening to my great grandma's stories while breaking beans. The little girl in the background is my mom.

My grand parents. Spent great multitudes of time with them. I'd spend a month every summer on their farm. Kinda funny how it was always during hay season.

My folks who I'm super blessed to still have around, and their in good health. This picture was taken on Christmas day 1956. I was born August 15, 1957 so I'm guessing I was about 3 weeks old at the time.

I posted these in another thread, so please bear with me if you saw them before. The soldier is my maternal grandfather, Harry Dinger, who served in World War I. Thanks to him I became eligible to join the Sons of the American Legion and the VFW Auxiliary. The picture showing an older gentleman is also of him in 1953, and he is holding me. I was able to get his service and discharge record from the courthouse. It had an interesting note, saying that since he didn't cause any problems while in the service, the Army would pay for his passage back to his place of enlistment, Punxsutawney, PA.

My dad's parents in 1925. His dad died when he was 18. I recently received this photo from a cousin - it's the first photo I've ever seen of my grandpa.

And yes, they only had one size bowl for their haircuts!

My father with my grandmother. She was a paraplegic, that’s why she was sitting in the car.

Big sister, little brother and me. We lost our brother to pancreatic cancer in March.
I’m not as good looking as I used to be.
