Let's Twist Again

I just got back from a concert over at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster, and it was one of the wildest concerts I've ever been at. The headliner was Chubby Checker, and he went virtually non-stop for over 1 1/2 hours. I saw him at a free concert he did around 15 years ago when the Gettysburg Outlets were opened, and from what I could tell he hadn't lost a move. Not only was he doing his own songs, but he was covering Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, the Beatles and Buddy Holly. And ironically, he covered "Peppermint Twist" by Joey Dee and the Starlights. And for the finale "The Twist/Let's Twist Again", just about the whole place was standing up and rocking, with a number of people in the audience allowed to go up on stage to dance. I sure hope I'm doing as well as he is when I get to be his age. I don't know where he's going in the future but if he's coming to your area you don't want to miss his show.

I think he opened for Pink Floyd back in '88 at 3 rivers Stadium.
Heck, the Stones are still doing it, but they don't know they died when that awful Some Girls album came out.

In 1963 my Grandpa took me to NY City on the train as a present for my graduation. We stayed in a hotel on 45th street, near Times Square. Our bathroom window looked out over the roof of the Peppermint Lounge. Chubby Checker was in town performing that week. All I can remember was him singing the Peppermint Twist until all hours of the night.

You mentioned a lot of singers he covered at that concert, but you missed one of the more important ones - Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.

Two essential skills, for band members, was to dance the Twist
and the Mashed Potato, in the first half of the '60s.
Some pianists, would push the bench back, dance on their feet.
The drummer was always dancing.

There might be a fun new dance for kids, coming to town, called the Crawfish.
It's Zydeco/Cajon inspired, and the 3 chord tune is titled,
The Crawfish Kid.
