Received my Factory Letter recently on my Model 29-2, 44 Magnum that shipped on December 31, 1980 to a LGS that is 7 miles from my house....so my 29-2 hasn't gone very far in the almost 40 years since.
There is really nothing special about my 29-2, but please see the comment by Roy on page 2 that starts with "In 1988...." This is about Model 29, with 8-3/8" barrel, that had special grooves cut into the barrel for S & W scope mounts, and that shipped with plastic inserts that had to be removed to install the S&W scope mounts. Roy says it was not popular and dropped in 1990. Product code was 101233.
I checked SCSW 4th, and the excellent book by Roy and Bill Cross, and I cannot find any reference to this model with these options, no info, no photos, not even that particular product code mentioned (although there are bucoo product codes listed).
Questions for you "long tom" fans, and anyone else interested.
Does anyone have one? Have you seen any pics? Have you seen any original(s) with the plastic inserts intact?
I would think that if actual production numbers were very low during the 2 years....this just might be the next "unicorn" I'll be watching for at estate sales, etc.
