I have 2 questions regarding level guns and since i figure there is likely some crossover here i might as well post them and we will see where it goes.

1. is there a dedicated lever action forum similar to this where a lever newb can read and learn. I am partial to Winchester guns if it matters.

2. anyone have thoughts on the Winchester 94AE in .307 ? A solution is search of a problem?

They are a lot smaller but pretty knowledgeable if you ask questions there. I really like it for the political section. I would bet the experts there will answer your lever action questions better and more accurately than any other forum.

I believe the 307 Win was an answer to a Question that was never ask. Think about it 1.) a rimmed 308 case, 2.) lower pressure, and strike 3) blunt bullets that loose their lower velocity fast. Winchester made the 88, but dropped it. Browning still makes the BLR 81 in 308 and Savage had the 99 in 308 also. Winchester thought the 88's didn't sell because they didn't look like 94, but the truth was they were ugly! I have a BLR 81 in 308 delighted with the way it handles and shoots, so I bought one for dad too. The was an AE in 35 cal also but I forget the name. It was more powerful than a 35 Remington, but not as popular (that spells NO SALES). The "successful" AE was the 375 Win. For what it is,it is great. Ivan

Thank you gentlemen. I will dig into Pacos and the MO forum. Both seem to have lots of good information now I know where to look.

Any thoughts on the 94AE in .307 ? Seems most feel that its an albatross. OK at many things, good at nothing.

307's still have a quick resale and a good value. I owned a 356 and was quite happy with it. Several will shoot regular 308 as the extractor is ling enough to catch the cartridge. 308 power in a 94 action, what's not to like?

What would your ammo situation be? Does your LGS carry .307 ammo?

I just looked it up on MidwayUSA. The good news is that (to my surprise) they actually have it in stock. Price is $37.49 for a box of 20.

There's a forum for everything out there. A lot of forums are trash though. At least this one has rules carved in stone and a team of moderators to kill off the arguements and trolls.

Have your tried the winchester owners forum?

WinchesterOwners.com ? Index page

Also, if you have a specific question on anything you could throw it out here and see what fish bites. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that has a handerin for more than just S&W's.

LEVER GUNS THE ULTIMATE COOLNESS FACTOR!

Maybe it's just cuz I'm a baby boomer & brainwashed by all those westerns but I love them and am a bit of a Winchester snob myself. I love my mdl 94 AE 375. If you are not a re-loader with that gun/caliber, you certainly should be. It should be a fine woods distance hunter & PLEASE don't put a scope on it, it's like a luggage rack on a racecar. A buddy has a Browning blr takedown in 308 & it is one of the most accurate rifles in any platform I have ever seen out to 200 yds. Feel free to scope, & you should the blr's & savage 99's to take advantage of the 308's potential & being able to safely load pointy bullets. congrats & enjoy.

thanks for all the direction. Any one own a Henry Big Boy? I'm not sure what I thing of the brass receiver or octagon barrel other than its got to be heavy but I do like the fact that they are made in the USA and can be bought new for less than JM Marlins and other quality lever actions are going for used.

The classic lever guns are Marlin and Winchester 30/30s and they made millions and million of em' and they perform as well today as 120 years ago. The ammo is plentiful and usually cheap at under 15 bucks/box and with the new Leverevolution ammo, its effective range is over 225 yards. I just bought an old 336 Marlin in great shape last week for $265 from a pawn shop and I'm excited to put a low power scope on it and see how she shoots.

I loved my Marlin 336, purchased nearly forty years ago, but traded it on a 700ADL in .243. Still miss the Marlin, and the Remington is long gone. My only .22 for many years has been a Golden 39A. Still have it, but it will go to my son soon.

I love a good lever rifle. I've always regretted that I never owned a Savage 99.

dont own one but have used one, its as good as any .
i can comment with some experience that for fast shooting a heavier gun is more desirable, the extra weight dampens the movements of cycling the action.allowing for much quicker follow up shot(s)
