I've seen a Lew Horton 624 (.44 Special, 3" bbl, round butt, SS, no box or papers) at a local GS for about $700. I'm tempted to buy but can't find this particular model in the latest Blue Book so don't know if the price is reasonable or not. Also, how many of these were made: hundreds; thousands? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sir.
That is a reasonable price for what you describe.
The Blue Book is not a useful pricing guide. It does make a good door stop.

Is it one of the more current Lew Horton Model 624's with a lock? Or one of the early one's from the 80's?

From what I've rather quickly gathered here on the forum, 5000 of the Lew Horton 624's in 3" Round Butt were made.

Here is a link to a thread on the board that will hopefully be of more help. Wish I could be of more help, but it's the best I can do on short notice.

It's a personal decision...

Just let me say that the 3" 624 is my favorite S&W carry N-frame ... just perfect in every way. I paid much less for mine, but those days are gone. The price you quote is about the going rate. Try to negotiate and get it down AMAP, but in the end you will have to decide how much you are willing to pay. As always, keep in mind that this no-lock, no-MIM, hammer-mounted firing pin 624 model will never be made again. As far as the gun itself ... fantastic!!

Also check out the recall facts at the bottom of the page here:

We have a local radio station (rural Oklahoma) that has a 'swap shop' every morning. I've picked up a gun or two and sold a few using it.

Not long ago I had a minty Model 28-2 N Series from the 80's. I no sooner than got off the phone placing the add on air and my phone started ringing. It was a guy who sells often on the swap shop, I recognized his voice and had called him several times about guns he had for sale..'way overpriced to say the least'.

I was only asking $400 for the 28 for a quick fix on another deal...exactly what I had in it. Anyway, I tell the guy exactly what it is, 'excellent' condition...etc. Next thing I know he's saying...'Well according to The Blue Book', I told him 'Whoa up' right then. I informed him how I wished I could buy S&W's all day long according The Blue Book. He knew he was busted...end of conversation.

Yep, makes a good door stop.

Wow, thanks for the very quick responses; they all help. Now that I think about it, I believe the LH 624 comes with "its" holster, so maybe that will push me over the edge.

ab7wh,

Check this link on Gunbroker.

S&W Lew Horton M 24, 29 N-Frame 3

If this is the holster with the gun? I'd say jump quick. I watched a Lew Horton holster alone go for $225 last week on Gunbroker for the blued 24-3. No telling what the holster up for auction now will go for...should be interesting.

I really enjoy my 624 LH. I paid about that for mine here in ca. I would pick it up for that price.

I'd say that's descent price. One at my local gun store for 899.99 and dosent even come with the holster.

There are new Model 624's? I had not heard this. Who is selling them?

If its the older 624 i.e. no dash, no lock, no MIM with original holster for 700.00 I wouldn't think twice about getting it. The 5000 made is correct except it was for the entire run of 3", 4", 6.5". So lot less than 5000 of the 3" floating around out there.

That is the holster for the 624 which is more readily found than the one for the 24. It is still a good price, though.

Buff,

My apology, I spoke too quickly. There are Lew Horton 624's out there with Square Butts, but they were shortly after the original run of 5000. The reason was is there was to only be 5000 of the 3" Round Butts, thus some Square butts were produced. I'm not sure how many though.

Buy it.

I was lucky enough to get the holster that came with.
It's one of the best carry holsters ever made for an N
frame.

That's a buy it now price especially with holster.

BEWARE HOWEVER! There was a recall on this model due to faulty cylinder steel. Call Smith before buying and give them the serial number so they can check if it's in the recall batch or see below:

624/629 Cylinder Recall

A Skeeter Skelton article in the October 1985 issue of Shooting Times magazine stated: "A steel supplier has just advised Smith & Wesson that they shipped a very small quantity of incorrect stainless steel material (11 bars) to us that was not in accordance with their certifications. The incorrect material was used in the cylinders for some large-frame stainless-steel revolvers, Model Numbers 624 (.44 Special) and 629 (.44 Magnum). The approximately 500 units containing this material were shipped from Smith & Wesson between January 1, 1985 and June 8, 1985. They would be included in the following ranges of serial numbers: ADXXXXX, AEXXXXX, AFXXXXX, AGXXXXX, AHXXXXX, ALVXXXX, N910000 thru N953000."

Skeeter goes on to say that the bad cylinder steel caused the recall of about 21,000 guns to find 500 with improper steel.

Today, Kate Fredette of Smith & Wesson basically confirmed this same info. The serial number range includes:

ADXXXX
AEXXXX
AFXXXX
AGXXXX
AHXXXX
ALVXXX (the “V” is not a typo)
N910000 thru N953000

Recalled guns were shipped between Jan 1, 1985 and June 8, 1985 only. The cylinder has to be checked on these handguns and the only way to know is by checking the full serial number against their records. The problem involves 500 guns shipped during that period.

If a handgun in the recalled range has already been returned to the factory for testing, a red letter “C” that is circled will be stamped on the box label, indicating that the gun passed re-inspection. No marks are made on the cylinder of checked guns, only the red “C” in the circle stamped on the box label.

If your gun is within this range and you do not have a box or know for certain that it has been tested, you should contact Smith & Wesson. S&W’s records prior to 1986 are not computerized, so it takes them a l ittle longer to look up the particulars.

You can E-mail your gun’s serial number to: [email protected]. S&W will contact you regarding the status of your particular gun. If your gun is included in the recall, you'll be sent a prepaid FedEx label and shipping instructions. While E-mail is best, you may also call S&W Customer Support at 1-800-331-0852.

Recalled cylinders are tested by magnafluxing. If your recalled gun does fail, there are no replacement cylinders. S&W will keep your gun and you will be offered the choice of another handgun of equal value or a refund.

Recenly bought on of the older 624s w/ no box in excellent condition for $650. After a trigger job and a set of hogue grips its the sweetest shooting Smith I've owned! Hope you reload otherwise ammo is pricey. Dennis

Check current prices on 629 and 625 snubs. You'll quickly realize that 700 for the 624 is a bargain.

I found my NIB 624 several years ago for 800 and I wouldn't sell it now for that price.
