lew Horton guns

Yes the historical letter will tell you where the gun shipped, when it shipped, and some of the model history as well. It will also call out the configuration in which it shipped.

Honestly, does it matter?

If its one of the"Lew Horton types" does it matter if it shipped to LH for distribution?

I don't think spending money to see it went to LH will add to the price of the gun over one that was sold to someplace else, all other things being equal.

You might find the information you are looking for by doing a search (via Google, or whatever) of the serial prefix, model number, and "Lew Horton", all combined. You could find others in the same serial # range, and if they are LH guns.

To those claiming it makes no difference whether it was shipped through Lew Horton, I beg to differ. Lew Horton is now defunct, making those guns more valuable, not to mention there were a few Lew Horton specials that became "over runs" that never made it to LH which may command a premium for being a rare bird. Take my 29-3 3" Lew Horton overrun, for example. S&W told me it shipped through Lew Horton. Lew Horton told me that it shipped with a Lew Horton product code but did not go to Lew Horton. 5000 went to LH and supposedly there were only 200 overruns of this model. I have yet to be able to verify this.

If you find someone willing to pay a premium for a LH gun, great. I wouldn’t. To me the fact the distributor is now defunct is inconsequential. Just my .02.

Your serial number prefix usually indicates a Lew Horton order.
Not certain if they always did though.

My 627 sure did. The serial number prefix isn't found in the back of the Standard Catalog, but on the page with the run down on 627s. It was one of 5K newly minted "Times 8" guns, and doesn't even have a dash number. Just 627 PC.

There was zero premium paid for it over any other 627.

It's fairly inconsequential NOW that they are defunct, maybe, but with time the LH guns will be worth more than if LH had stayed open.

Interesting thread!

Do people add value for other distributors, like Camfour or Davidsons?

What about standard models, does an M66 have greater value if it was sold through a certain distributor?

What about retailers where the guns were sold from?

Wolf and Klar (sp) come to mind but thats sometime ago?

Strangely enough in my NY-1 collecting, I don't consider the overruns as real NYPD guns. They were not sold to or delivered to the NYPD. So to me even though they are generally in better condition, have boxes and things. I still put a lesser value on them.

Not to me.

You've made that pretty clear.

For some reason I agree about the NY1s. The distributor overruns seem to be a little different in that regard.

I bet that it shipped to LH will make a difference to some collectors. Collectors are funny that way. In general, they all like to collect something something unique, something different, something a little more scarce.

I recall when I first joined the forum being astounded that anyone would deem original cardboard shipping boxes worthy of collection and of commanding high prices. Or those crazily high priced prewar screwdrivers.

What has no or little worth to some can be worth a lot to others.
