Light Strikes

Cousin bought a 15-22 last month, cycled fine (once we got a new extractor since the factory one blew out the first day and went AWOL) and no firing issues for the first few weeks. Now the thing exhibits light strikes continuously. Like 2 in a row, one every 3, and to where 5 shots in a row is a feat rarely accomplished. Its his gun and I dont have my hands on it currently so I can't examine it, but just wondering what all other experiences folks have had similar.

I've read a few things, but its scattered over a few posts. Dirty chamber, firing pin too short, etc. If I were guessing, I'd like to get the gun and scrub the chamber to see if that were the cause since it just started happening. He says he's cleaned it, but to what I extent I can't say. Just asking for those with similar issues and what fixed your problem.

If the rifle was firing fine before the light strikes started and a good cleaning of the chamber and bolt doesn't cure the problem; then you may have chipped or deformed the tip of the firing pin.

As far as cleaning the bolt, use some power blast or whatever they call that spray cleaner to clean the channel the firing pin rides in. You will be amazed at how much stuff will come outta there.

Gracias. I need to get my hands on that gun and pull the pin and clean that thing out. Doubt he is capable. Guessing you have to drive that roll pin out to get the firing pin out.

I'm betting on the firing pin as well. I had one that did that. An edge was cracked off on the tip of the firing pin. Called S&W and they sent me out a new pin and spring. If you don't knock the roll pin all the way out you won't need a new one. Just tap the old one back in. Mine has held like that for about a year with no issues.

Got my hands on it Friday night. Chipped firing pin. He'll call S&W tomorrow and hopefully they will oblige. If not, any idea where to find one (other than Numrich who doesn't show to have it)?

My cousin called S&W today. They want the whole gun back. Didn't get as luck as some of you folks it seems. Probably needs to call back and do the same thing til he gets "the cool guy" that will send him a new firing pin.

One thing is for sure.

The first aftermarket vendor who creates a firing pin for the 15-22 is going to generate a lot of sales.

Unless it is a copyright/patent issue then surely it is just a matter of time.

Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I have a spare firing pin.

Have had one from bout 2 weeks after I got my gun.

Paid through the nose for it but I do have one.

I'll say this, when he got this thing, I was thinking about getting one for my kids since you can collapse the stock for length of pull. Completely glad I chose to just get another 10-22 and cut down the stock now. Little bit of a pain, but no issues there and I've already got a ton of mags to share.

Really like his 15-22 though, when it works.

Is there enough material at the chip to file it instead of sending the *** in? If not, I'd call back, hope for another rep and tell them you need to buy another pin due to losing that one. That one (inconsistent) policy of theirs will likely prevent me from ever buying another S&W firearm.

He called back today and got another tempermental person on the phone. Bucked up on them and said he wasn't sending in the whole rifle. They told him to tape the bolt to the lower and send it (which made no sense to me since the lower is an FFL item), and that they would not test fire it. Cousin just said thats fine and if it breaks or doesn't work, they're getting it right back. We'll pull the whole extractor assembly out as well since all that is aftermarket from when the OEM stuff blew out the first day.

Funny that when Smith still had Walther USA, I had a P99 with a cracked sear block housing. Called them and they said it would be like $100. Put it up, called a few months later and got some guy that sold me the block with no parts in it for like $16. Should have got 2, as Umarex (Walther) says they don't even have the part. May drive by there at lunch some day since they are less than a mile from work and haggle them about one.

BS (on them). Regarding FFL, when shipping from either end for repair, FFL isn't required for lower, handgun, etc. They're a bunch of CSs.
