First I'd like to say hi to everyone on this forum. I've read through a lot of threads to gather information on different issues I've had with my M&P15 22 and have made the obligitory mods to tighten up my butt stock and have replaced the trigger spring with the JP one as well as adjusting the trigger creep. So thanks to all who have contributed to such threads they have been a great source of help.

My questions are;

It would seem a lot of people have been adjusting the trigger creep on their M&P15s' for a few years now and there has been mention of some safety issues with it, yet I can not find any post that say whether anyone who has made the adjustment has had any problems. If there were any I'm sure they would have come to attention by now. Has anyone had any issues?

Secondly many of you guys have replaced the stock fitted forend handguards with one of the many 'aftermarket' types but I was wondering if any one has modified the stock fitted one by cutting it down a few inches and if it is at all possible to do without removing the barrel?

Lastly I'd just like to say to the majority of members who are American, you are all very privaliged to live in a country where you are free to own and use a gun with few restrictions.

Thanks for the post moosequito. Yes we are grateful to our forefathers who wrote our Constitution and it's original Bill of Rights...which many define as a "privilege", but most gun owners here in America define as our "Rights", clearly defined by the 2nd Amendment to our Bill of Rights, "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"....is the most important of the original First Ten Amendments...for without that one, the other ones would most likely be gone already.

moosequito,

First, again thanks for the kind comment for us "Yanks". However , we have the right to own a gun or two, or three.... Not to sound arrogant, but gun ownership is a right and not a privilege. A privilege is granted, e.g. a license to operate an auto on public road. Where as a right, is inalienable, our right to keep and bear arms, was adopted on December 15, 1791, a few years after the aggressive negotiations with King George V. The framers of the US Bill of Rights codified a precondition or common law (with reference to the English Bill of Rights of 1689). Enough history. But, us cousins hope the UK and Australia will wise up.....the criminals have the guns, the lawful do not, and the now the police need to carry....

Concerning your question.
1. Never try to mess with a forend/hand guard without removing the barrel. you can put pressure on the barrel nut, upper receiver and then cause a whole group of new problems. Order a shoo wrench or other 15-22 barrel nut wrench. Remove the barrel, barrel nut, then shorten the handguard.

2. Tacticool22.com has an aftermarket barrel nut/ free Float Handguard Converter. remove the S&W store away. install the converter....then you can install any number of after market hand guards just like its 5.56mm brothers.

Aim small,
tat

I cut down the fore grip on mine by two inches to make the rifle look more balanced with a A2 sight. To prevent damage to the barrel I used ShooBoy's barrel wrench ( See Vendors sticky) which worked perfectly. A 15-22 owner should have one of these anyway. I slid it down the barrel and sawed away. I used a small hobby saw to do the job and then a dremel tool to put finnished edge on it. Shoo's barrel wrench protected the barrel and there was not a mark on it. The front cap does not fit inside now, but the tabs do go into the internal grooves and it makes a nice transition from the grip to the sight. This worked very well and took about an hour.

Can you post some pics plz? Preferably one showing the whole gun and one close of of the edge of the handguard where you cut it? I want to see how it looks. Thanks in advance.

Yes. I would like to see how that turned out as I'm probably going to do the same to my rifle. Thanks for letting us know how you went about doing it.

I think if you look at some of the pics in this thread, you can see the cut down part....

Below are photos of the new version of the A2 sight for the 15-22 from TrueShotTechnologies.com (FMJ50) .
