Linear compensators direct the gasses and sound down range. The sound level at the shooter’s ear can be lower. Not necessarily quieter, just aimed away from the shooter. The devices are as low as fifty bucks and need no tax stamp.

I’m not sure how these don’t meet the ATF’s definition of a suppressor, so maybe it’s the next bump stock to be tossed around in the courts.

Anyone have experience or knowledge on this?

I've yet to see any chatter that the ATF pays any attention to them.

The view of the youtubers is that they are useful on pistol caliber carbines and SBRs in an indoor environment.

I tried a few different models with a couple AR-9 carbines. There wasn’t enough difference to make a difference, which is why the ATF just doesn’t care.

In my case, I use one on an 8.3” AR-9 to extend the barrel past the free float hand guard when I am not shooting it suppressed. It works well for that.

That said, I’ve noted some faux .22 LR suppressors with end caps that used to be sold at gun shows. It’s likely with an end cap they did create some minor sound reduction and thus attracted attention from the ATF as I have not seen one like that sold in a couple years.

I raise the point as some of those linear compensators are not open ended and potentially could reduce the sound level enough to attract the wrath of the ATF.

My sample of one really threw the accuracy off.
My assumption is it probably worked fine on the next gun. Dunno.
