Rediscovered my old Remington BDL way in the back of the safe. Had it in Germany in the '80s and its equipped with EAW mounts and rings sporting a Smith & Bender 6x scope. Have not shot it since the 80's. Now I need to reload for it and see how she shoots. What are your favorite loads for the 7mm Rem Mag???

A great rifle/caliber.

I've used a 700 in 7 Rem Mag on many Elk and, early on, some Deer, Antelope and Caribou.

Initially I loaded a 140 grain Sierra for Antelope/Deer. This was a great combination but a bit destructive on close shots.

I've always used the 160 Nosler Partition on Elk and Caribou with perfect satisfaction. I use Federal 215 primers, Rem brass and IMR4831 powder. If I was starting over today, I'd try ReLoader 22, which is a bit slower.

Both of these loads shoot into about 3/4" (100 yards and 3 shot group) with my 700.

My only 700 complaint was the super-bright blueing and stock finish on the older 700s, which was easily spotted in the field. I had my 700 coated with Teflon and installed a H-S Precision stock. This was a good cure and made it more durable in tough country.

My target load is a Hornady A-max 162 grain bullet in front of 69.3 grains of RL-25, chronographed at 2910 fps. For hunting, I use 160 grain Sierra Gamekings. I had good results with 66.5 grains of NMRP (3000 fps) but haven't bought any Norma powder for quite some time. I will be looking into loads for the Sierra using RL-25, probably around 70 grains. CCI 250 magnum rifle primers, always. My 7mm seems to like loads near or at max.

Larry, I've tried H1000, RL-22, and RL-25 recently and have gotten better velocity out of RL-25.

7 mm Mag

Thanks guys, I made it to the Pensacola gun show yesterday and came away with a jug of IMR 4831, some R22, and a jug of H4350 with a couple thousand Tula large rifle primers. This should set me up to try your favorite loads. Now to find a long distance range for some shooting.

Sorry to butt in and plz excuse my ignorance, but I've been curious about 7mm, mostly since tons of it stayed on the shelves. Looks like it is strictly a rifle round? Is it a "desirable" caliber and which 7mm weapons would you recommend for target and home defense as an alternate to 22lr and .223?

7mm

The 7mm Remington Magnum is a long range, high velocity hunting rifle suitable for elk, moose, mule deer, and other plains animals depending on the type and weight of the bullet used. It will shoot flat at 400 yards and I have seen videos of consistent hits at one mile. It is not a home defense weapon in my opinion as it is too powerful and can not be contained in close quarters in an urban enviorment. My thoughts!
