Yesterday I took our younger golden retriever, Capella, to the dog park. She's 2 1/2 years old, on the small side, and still very much a puppy.
The dog park it's about 1 1/2 acres surrounded by a chain-link fence. The ground has a thick covering of wood chips and bark mulch. There are several mature oaks that provide shade. It's a nice facility maintained by volunteers and donations.
It was mid afternoon and we had the place to our selves for a short period.
A young couple showed up with a baby in a stroller and a female Bernese Mountain dog. They were new to the area, never been to the dog park before. Their dog was about 70 pounds and the same age as mine, a nice dog. Capella naturally wanted to engage the other dog in play but she was intent on checking the park out.
Capella came back over to me where I was chatting with the couple. Funny thing was I had just asked them how the dog got along with their little baby girl. They responded that the dog adored her. During this conversation I noticed their dog was coming toward us. Capella noticed the baby in the stroller and went over toward it. The Mountain dog quickly got between the stroller and Capella and gave her a little bit of a growl. Capella understood the message and came over to my side. The dog is a class act.
I was quite impressed and the couple was very pleased with their dog's protective behavior.
Shortly there after the two dogs were you yucking it up and having a good time playing.
