Ok I found another local pistol to advise my friends here to. I have no financial interest in this, just passing it on since I considered this a nice find.
422, 4.5" barrel. FIXED sights. Black grips. No box
Excellent shape with one exception....
On the back of the slide there is what appears to be corrosion trying to come through the finish. It looks like a light brown stain on the finish. I couldn't discern any texture associated with it yet, but I have seen this type of corrosion on some of the 422's and 622VR's. Something about the steel or the finish on some of these is leading to corrosion coming through the finish. There isn't any wear or scratch leaving the metal vulnerable, it's coming from under the finish. (I haven't heard anybody ask S&W to see if they might refinish under the lifetime warranty given the circumstances.)
Recap: This pistol looks practically unused. I field stripped and looked at the back of the firing pin and almost no wear. Fixed sight is 100%. Most show some wear because it's plastic. If you know the 422's you know the finish wears on the sharp edges if you look at it wrong. You really have to look carefully to see any imperfections. A few really small ones, but I emphasize really small. I'd say 95% condition. Bore looked great. I believe this config of fixed sights in the 4.5" barrel was the most unusual in the 422,622,&2206's. Like the 622VR I posted about earlier that another member snapped up, it's a shame there is no box for this. It's not anywhere near as rare as the VR, but still it's unusual to find the 422's in this nice condition especially in the 4.5" barrel because they are so packable most were, and show their "character". I forgot to look at whether it was made in Springfield or Houlton.
Price: $249.99 From what I have seen sold on GB, that would seem to be a pretty fair price. I don't know if he'll come off that any or not. It's at 5 star pawn in La Grange, Ky. Ask for Bill and tell him a local guy on the S&W forum posted it up. I told him I was going to post it because I thought somebody here would probably be interested. And to be clear, I stand no financial gain on this sale except I do reserve the right to remind Bill that I helped him out the next time I'm negotiating with him on something, lol. If this had been a 2206 this might have been an entirely different thread. I mean I like y'all, but I'm still looking for a 2206 in 4.5 myself.
I might not have given anybody else a shot at it.
Hope somebody is glad to know about this.
