LOCK- ..can't get past "the hole".

Look at it this way

Much as I hate to jump into these dangerous waters I look at this from a different angle.

While I also wish Slick Willie & Co. had not forced S&W to adopt the lock, I'm happy that Smith is still here and I can still buy a new S&W revolver. His intent was to shut S&W down. S&W may have the 'HH' but they're still in business and making dozens of flavors of handguns and long guns. You don't have to buy them with the lock but if you want or need a new revolver you can still get one.

We could be in the same boat that the Colt fans are. If you check their website you have your choice of 2 handguns and 1 long gun: the 1911, SAA, and the match AR series.(In a few different styles but 3 basic models) That's it. No Troopers, no Pythons, no Diamondbacks, no Detective Specials. www.colstmfg.com

Are new S&Ws with locks worse than no new revolvers? Worse than no more S&W?

Something to think about.

Very well put BW Smith, seems a lot of people forget that there was an effort by a Democratic Congress and a President that tried to run gun companies out of business and some like Ruger, S&W, and Taurus for example all have locks now days, those that don't are not around or almost non existent today such as Colt.

A lot of aftermarket companies that were around 20 years ago are now gun companies while the companies they made aftermarket items for are now gone or just hanging on by name alone. Think Colt and Para for example. I have a new Para 1911 and would not own a new Colt as they are not the quality of days gone buy or Para and are only alive thanks to military contracts and name.

"... can't get past "the hole".

Wow. That means... no new S&Ws. Specifically, no new 5" 63; no 625JM or 627 Pro; no 686SSR; no .460/.500 Magnums, and so on. Boy, it would really be awful to not be able to enjoy new S&W models! I am glad, as an old fuddy-duddy of 61, that I am more tolerant. No, I would never specify 'the hole' if I were able to order one 'without' - but I am a realist. I love my SS S&Ws! Besides, did anyone give me a choice when it came to a fancy locking plastic box with moisture trapping foam and a big trigger lock? What was wrong with a cardboard box and wax paper? Where was the derision then??

Colts issues had nothing to do with locks. To equate business with the locks is false. Very bad financial decisions including horrible gun designs (Colt 2000 anyone) led to ruin. Remember Colt lost the AR contracts to FN, Colt lost the Army contract to Beretta, etc.

Not one Company is propering due to ILs. Most consumers are unaware of the issue. It's only on Collector forums where we DO know the difference and remember when quality counted.

ILs are part of the CYA factor that companies seem to think they need. The Clintons started it but that was a looong time ago...

What a refreshing thread.

I had never heard any of this data before.

For the record-
I don't like the lock. I wish the lock was not there. I also wish Thomas Jefferson would run for reelection.
I don't think my wishes are going to come true, so I suppose I will adapt to the current reality.

I believe that there have been lock malfunctions. I have not really investigated it, but the simple law of averages says there must be. Any machine can malfunction. That runs true from hammers to space shuttles. Believe it or not, I have seen S&W's that never had a lock fail to fire.

The fact is that you stand a far better chance of dying because of an auto malfunction or even an airplane malfunction than you do because of a lock malfunction.

So, we have a situation we all have to deal with.
This thread has pretty well covered the various options for dealing with it:
Love it
Hate it
Buy it
Don't buy it
Leave it
Remove it

The incessant whining and moaning gets tiresome.

Joe states it rather well-
Some people just reject change, we all do to some extent. But there are a good number of people on here that just go from topic to topic complaining about the lock and the MIM parts. I've watched new S&W owners come here to learn more about the new revolver they just purchased and get ripped apart because they bought something with a lock or MIM part. Understandably they leave after a few visits never to return.
This is what I hate the most. We need to recruit new shooters, NOT discourage the new guys. Every time a newbie leaves, WE lose.

One of the things I liked about the last software this forum was on was you could add users to a group that was ignored. God, I miss that feature!
C'mon now- we've been here about 5 months.
LOOK around at the features- look through the FAQ's and especially the User CP and get familiar with the features.
You DO have the IGNORE feature. It is in the User CP.
