Question on 638-3. The locking bolt pin fell out and before I put the locking bolt, spring, and pin back together I decided to dry fire to see if it worked properly in the event this had happened at a time when I needed to use it. It seemed ok, but would it be any different when shooting?

It'll shoot without the locking bolt pin or bolt even. Without the pin the bolt will most likely just fall out when you open the cylinder. If the pin is loose, bend it SLIGHTLY, or wack one end with a hammer to deform it SLIGHTLY before installing it. Install it non-deformed end first. That should keep it in place.

Thanks for the info, but it does seem a bit crazy that I should have to fix what amounts to a new revolver.

OK. Then call S&W and see if they'll warranty it.

Yup, let THEM flatten, stake or Loc-Tite the pin. They may even have a slightly oversize pin, they may even re-barrel the gun, who knows with S&W. That is not intended as criticism BTW, just a statement of fact. They are very good at going out of the way on warrantee repairs to make sure things are right when they are done.

Since your gun has the "Lifetime Guarantee" give them a call at 800-331-0852 and chances are they will send a call-tag for the gun and pay shipping both ways. As long as you get it to them before mid-June (before the last 2 weeks of July shut-down for vacations, cleaning and re-tooling) you likely will have it back, fixed in the way they consider best as regards satisfying the customer, in less than 2 weeks.
