This German Shepherd showed up at our door a few days ago and seems to have made it's self at home. It is very friendly and playful. I think it had missed a few meals and was on the skinny side but my wife is taking care of that.
We don't know who he belongs to and the neighbors we've asked say they've never seen him. The local vet has not heard of any missing GS.
The problem is we already have three dogs and really don't need another but we would hate for something bad to happen to him.
So, if anyone in the Birmingham area or even surrounding areas would like a free GS just PM me and let me know.
We are asking family, friends and co-workers to take him but we would like him to find a really good family. I believe he would be a great pet.

Wow, he is a great looking dog. Living on the Parkway, there are a lot of strays dropped in our area. We have the best luck placing them by posting flyers at the local convenience and grocery stores. When interested parties would call, we would do reverse lookup on the phone number, when everyone had a land line, and drive by the home to see if we thought it was suitable. All the best in finding a good home for your temporary boarder.

Dumped pets are SOP in this city since the economy went South. The people who really get my blood up are those who walk away from a house and leave their pets in there. They should be banned from keeping pets for life.

great looking guy. my wife says she wishes we were closer to you. she had one like him when she lived at home.

Watch that whoever you give the dog to doesn't have pit bulls. Some love to use shepherds for *training*!

On edit: THERE ARE great people that own and treat pit bulls responsibly. The pbs don't seem to play well with strange dogs though.

Beautiful animal and its great that he came to your home, one way or another he will be taken care of I'm sure.

Might have the vet scan him for microchips. Some dogs have these implanted. They would have owners information.

That is a GOOD lookin' dog. Way too healthy to have been on it's own very long. Obviously well socialized.

Not long ago I would have bet a lot of $$$ that somebody must be frantic, but with this economy... he may have just been let loose.:(

If you have no luck placing him I'm sure any GSD rescue would be all over him. If I were closer... no... I already have 2 dogs + one foster...

German shepherd rescue + alabama - Google Search

This is the wife's GSD.

Find the phone number of your local German Shepard Rescue Society. They often will find a good home for a needy shepard. Just Google German Shepard Rescue Society should get it.

Before you give it away, I would put an ad in the paper. There's a chance that someone greatly misses thier dog.

If someone claims the dog ask that they pay for the ad first.

I would hope that someone would do that for me if my dog were lost.

^^^ This. Too many times people adopt a dog with the best of intentions but really are not a good fit for the size/breed. And really, some people would be better off with goldfish.

A rescue will screen prospective adopters and make sure (or as sure as possible) that it's a good match.

I've rehomed 3 dogs on my own & I tell you it's enormously stressful wondering if I've sent the dog with the right people.

Do NOT give the breed or description beyond "Found male dog." A GSD like that would be highly desirable for reselling or worse. Sad to say their ARE people who search ads for that reason. If the owners see an ad for "Found male dog" they WILL call.

He's obviously a smart dog - showed up at a home where he knew the people would take good care of him ........
Good luck on placing him with the right people !

If I was not out of work right now I would be more than willing to drive the 8 hours to Birmingham and take him. We have been wanting a German Shepherd with the same coloration ever since our last dog passed away. He is a beautiful dog!

Did you call the local police to see if anyone has reported their dog missing? Maybe even call surrounding communities, or the local shelter/humane society if you have one.

I know a lot of cops and dispatchers think the calls about a missing dog are a PITA, but everywhere I've worked, we still make a note, put it on the blotter, or keep the info somewhere. It's worth it (to me, anyway!) to reunite a dog with its humans, without having to take it to the pound and hope it's found by its owner.

For those that have posted here with a desire to adopt this lonely boy I'll put up some money to get him and his new slave together.
Dog loving D.G.
