Looking at an HK USP 40....opinions?

I bought a used one a few years ago to compliment the USP9 I just prior. I would say as the USP was designed initally around the 40 S&W, it is a dream to shoot; as it should due to the weight.

New USP's seem to sell for between $750-$850 and I wouldn't recommend one at that price. I picked up a full size USP .40 Variant 3 (no safety) several years ago for $425. It was used, but had been shot very little and came with the box and papers. It seemed like a "no brainer" price and I had a good amount of .40 S&W ammo squirreled away at home to run through it.

It a very well made gun and I like it better than my Glock 22. In typical German fashion, the fit and finish is excellent. Mine is accurate, pleasant to shoot (for a .40) and the reliability has been flawless.

On the down side, the rail is proprietary HK and lights/lasers made for a picatinny rail won't fit without an adaptor. That's not a bid deal for me, since I don't hang accessories off my pistols. The magazine release is similar to the release on the P7M8 (an ambidextrous lever at the back of the triggerguard). It's conveniently located and functions fine, but you might fumble with it a bit if you shoot a number of different guns with conventional American style release buttons. It's a rather large gun, so I don't carry mine concealed. I view it as a good candidate for a duty/range/home defense/truck gun. Spare magazines are reasonably priced if you shop around (around $35/ea).

I'd agree with everything good that's been said so far, but as s&wchad said above, I find the original USP to be rather large and "boxy". My favorite is the P 2000, which is the successor model and basically a "de-horned" version of the compact USP variant. I found it ergonomically perfect for my hands and easy to conceal (although mine wasn't my regular carry gun). They are indeed rather pricey unless you can find a good used one.

I have had mine for 10+ years and have had ZERO malfunctions. Accuracy is great as well. I once was "challenged" by my son to shoot at a 12" plate at 200 yards off hand. When it hit the plate, he said it didn't count unless I could do it again. The second shot "clanged" and he owed me a six pack!

It carries in the field very well. I am used to the 1911 frame mounted safety which the USP has, and can be carried cocked and locked if that is preferred. All in all it is a fine pistol that I won't be letting go anytime soon.

USP 40

I have a USP in 9, 40 & 45, they're awesome guns, durable, accurate, incredibly reliable. The only detraction is if you have small hands, then I would consider a grip reduction like many are doing to Glocks.

I agree with SWChad, there are plenty of mint used USP's for sale on various boards for 1/3 to 1/2 of MSRP. I picked up a like new USP 40 V1 with 10 mags and a case for $500 and after 5k rounds, it has never failed. You'll never regret buying it.

I have USP 40s in full size and compact.

As said above, I've NEVER had a failure of any kind with either. I used to carry the full size in a shoulder holster on camping trips and it worked fine. The compact will fit in the pocket of my Carhart coat, but they are both a bit large for CC. I guess it's fair to say that there are smaller alternatives that also do the job. They aren't heavy --- but they ARE bulky.

I have night sights on the compact and it's my bedside gun.

Mine are both sighted for the 135 grain load from CorBon. It does 1350 fps or so from the full size variant. Mine are both set up for left hand use -- something I appreciate being able to do.

I bought a new one in the mid 90's... never a hint of trouble.

I just bought a Sig .40 P226 from Aurthur88 on Gunauction for $365+s/h. Very happy with it. Police trade-in, but very good- almost excellent condition. He had some USP's in the same condition as my Sig at the time selling for about $10-$20 more. I was thinking of bidding just cause they were a good price, but I already have one.

I have the full size 9 and 45. Compact 45 and P2000 40s&w I like them all. I had a USP 40 full size and compact. Sold them both. For some reason the seemed too snappy. I own other 40s and a HK P2000 in 40 but the USPs seemed too snappy. Maybe it was just me.

As for the guns themselves they are very reliable. I think the full size is a little low on ammo for its size but it came out in the early 90s. The USP series was built around the 40. It was the original caliber for that gun

I carried an issued USP-C in 45 for a few years. No problems, very accurate and bought it when we transitioned to another firearm.

Great gun. For carry I would prefer the P2000 which is just an evolved USP. Smaller than a full size USP and grip texture is less aggressive for carry. Also the advantage of a standard accessory rail and no external safety which I prefer.

Highly recommended. They handle the 40S&W round exceptionally well. You can find barely-fired police surplus ones from time to time for good prices, around $400.

I bought one 18 years ago new and traded it to my LGS for a rifle about five years later.
I thought the HK 40 too snappy on the recoil and now I have an all steel Sig P226

We have a USP in .40 and .45 here and both are excellent pistols that we have never had any issues with and have functioned flawlessly. As noted by some they are pricey, but so are many other great pistols and it is possible to find used ones in good shape at less. I am another one who finds the design(remember it is 20 years or so old) to be large, blocky and boxy, but pistols designed back then have not had the decades since then where designs have decreased in size. One nice feature if you like it is the USP or at least the version we have can be loaded, carried and used as either a single action or a DA/SA pistol. My wife likes that because she keeps the USP .40 in her car console and likes being able to decock the pistol for when it is in the console with a longer, heavier pull for the first shot. I think the USP in any caliber is a great choice. I would not be put off by the price because you are buying quality but I can see where others might want to look around for one that is used.
