I am looking for a 45 Colt load using Hornady 250 grain XTPs.
It will be used in a Ruger Blackhawk, so normal SAA pressures is not an issue. Just a hunting load that will make the XTP expand on whitetails. Thanks.

This is right from Hogdons site, Most powder companies have online load data. H110 loads will likely be the fastest you'll find. As far as expansion goes... Good Luck....

I have seen that data. I know it is debatable but do you think H110 and W296 are the same? Many say yes a few say no.

The reason I ask is I have about 4 pounds of W296 and zero H110. Plus add to that powder availability is not the greatest right now.

It really doesn't matter what "some say", it only matters what Hodgdon and St. Mark's says and they say it comes out of the same exact spigot. You can believe what you want but you can't change the fact they are the same exact powder under a different label. Facts are facts...

Go to the Hodgdon load data site and look under the Ruger only 45 Colt loads and you will find what you need. Where it lists H110 you can safely substitute W296 since Hodgdon tells us they are the same.

Thanks. I have always believed they were the same too. When it comes to reloading I like to error on the side of caution, proceed slowly, and verify everything.

You are on the right track doing that and mistakes are less likely when you proceed with caution. Keep up the good work!

If you have some 2400, I've used 20-21grs with that bullet & CCI 300.

If the W296 you have is fairly new, it's the same as H110. The old stuff was different though.

Hornady 250gr XTP

Scouring the Internet and old Manuals I found 8.5grs Unique
to be 840fps (S&W 625 45LC 4"Bbl.)

I have been using 9.2grs Unique 850fps (from old Hornady
manual) but seems pretty shout, out of my S&W 625-6
45LC 4"Bbl. Appears clean burning.

Any thoughts? What's a new Hornady manual say?

reloading 250 XTP

Thank you BlueDot37. Wow that's way less Unique
than in the Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading
Rifle-Pistol Vol II, first printing, 1973. (of course
things were different back than too)

HDY #1 1973 : 250gr HP @ 10grs/Unique - 950fps, max load
SAA 4-3/4"bbl revolver.
compared to;

HDY #8: 250gr XTP @ 7.4gr/Unique - 800fps, max load, std pressure.

When I shot the Unique 9.6 and 9.4, primers edges rounded
nicely, ejected with little effort, clean burning, accurate (once
I controlled the flinching).

I decided to reload 8.5grs Unique, from the nice post in
the Firingline com, I found while scrounging around the
internet. He was using a S&W 625 45LC Mountain
Gun 4"Bbl. (aprox. 800fps). Poster has several reloads
and picture of revolver.

Thank you all when you reply.

I load 20.5 grains of H110 with Federal large pistol magnum primers for the 250g XTP and am quite happy with the results. My Ruger Bisley with a 2x scope can tag a prairie dog sized target repeatedly at 100 yards with this load.
But it is not for S&W handguns.

Just got back from the Shooting Range.

Tested the HDY 250gr XTP / 8.5grs Unique / CCI LP 300
/ Starline 45LC brass / 800fps? S&W Model 625-6 Mountain
Gun 45LC 4"Bbl.

This reload to seems to be accurate. Still appears clean
burning. Still kicks pretty good.
My first three were terrible. This target was my
second three after I simmered down.

Target was set at 30 feet.
