So...just got an offer for a new job and am planning on using a small portion of the signing bonus for a new firearm. This one will likely be a range toy as opposed to a defensive weapon...here are my ideas so far:

Colt 1911 Series 70
S&W Model 27 3.5" Barrel
S&W Model 66 3" Barrel
Colt Python
M1 Garand
Colt SAA
H&K P7M8

I have never owned any of the above - so I'm looking for some feedback on this list and / or other options...

Unless you're looking for a first generation Colt SAA, I would suggest that you consider a US Firearms Single Action. The US Firearms revolvers are better made than the current Colts. Put them side-by-side, and the difference is obvious.

I could go with any of them, except the H&K. I have never warmed up to any H&K products except the MP-5

The Garand would be a fine thing to own. It's not as versatile a defensive arm as a handgun, however, unless you live way out in the country. Great for match shooting, high power plinking, etc.

A 1911, or either of the Smith revolvers, would be great to own too. You really present too many good choices. :>)

I'm partial to 1911s, but they're not much fun (to me) unless they've been accurized. I had a 4-inch Python that I shot the fenders off of -- really accurate and fun at 25 yards with everything from 148 grain .38 wadcutters, to full power 125 grain .357s. I did go to the expense of having a 5-lb. DA trigger installed on that gun, which made it a pleasure to shoot with unfailing 10-ring accuracy.

My second choice would be the M1.

I own a Garand, a Colt Series 70 and a SAA. Of the three, I get more range fun out of the Garand.

I've had an H&K P7M8, and it was a difficult firearm to master. It's primarily a self defense weapon, and you have to shoot it, and nothing else, for a year or so, to be effective with it. It wouldn't be much fun on the range, unless you were shootin some sort of practical course. In that case, the Colt Series 70 would be a fun gun too.

Like you said a "range" gun, my first choice would be a 6 inch Python, cheap to shoot with .38 but still have the option of full .357s when needed. I have one that doesn't get shot much anymore, when I walk the woods I'll take my scoped 686. The next choice would be for long "range", you can't beat a M1 if you can find one and have the bucks to buy.

If you're not familiar with it, look into getting an M1 through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. I think its one of the best deals going.

K22 2nd Model, shooter grade, range toy extreme :)

It's not the size of the collection, but what's in it.

I've never really had any strong feelings one way or another about any colt wheel guns, guess I'm not sophisticated enough or somethin' :D. But a series 70 or an M1 would certainly be a fun toy to own.
