I spent two hours in a CALIFORNIA gun shop on 1/31/14, and when almost done processing my purchase of an M&P .40 compact, was told that it fell off the California approved gun registry that morning at 12:01 a.m. for lack of ammo imprinting. LOVING California right now. What would be the best alternative for CCW? Anything they sell currently, or am I into the used market? Thank you!

So, the shop is just supposed to eat that gun??
If so, can you find a shop that will consider their inventory as "grandfathered"?

That said, I've never felt under gunned with a J frame stoked with +P hollow points. 38 revolvers have been getting the job done just fine since before most of us were born.

A .40 Shield. I had a .40c and it was too heavy and bulky for me but I absolutely love the Shield. Or would that be unapproved also in the Peoples Republic? Lots of firepower and you get a couple more rounds than you get out of a revolver. Very easy to carry from my experience. Much easier than the compact

I would run not walk and order what guns you can. S&W announced all semi-autos are going to eventually be dropped from the Registry.

I don't know where you live in CA but you might have some difficulty getting a CCW. If you are still interested in the M&P40c find a store that does the single shot exemption. It's a loophole in CA law the allows a non roster gun to be converted to single shot so it can be DROSed. After the ten day wait it's converted back to its factory condition. This is how a lot of people are getting around the roster.

The Single Shot Exemption (SSE) is one way around the list. However, it's not as easy as some make it out to be.

First, you have to find a shop that will do it for the particular gun you're interested in. I only know of two in CA that will do an SSE for the M&P. So, it may involve some traveling; twice. Once to do the paperwork and then again to pick the gun up.

Then there is the cost. Most store charge $100 or more for the service. I think that's reasonable, but it's still $100 and that's not chump change.

Few month back I contacted CA DOJ regarding shipping firearms in to CA. During the conversation I asked exact the same question and the lady on the phone told me in that case they can sell only to exempt persons (i.e. peace officers) or sell it out of state.

I love CA but their laws are so ridiculous that whoever is responsible for those should be slapped in the face with the pamphlet they are written on...

Here in the Bay Area there are more than a few dealers doing SSE as a result of the recent announcements from Ruger and S&W. Some of these stores doesn't charge extra to SSE if you buy from them. Others charge between &50-$100 extra to recover the cost of the parts they had to have made to make the gun comply with SSE. Most dealers can get NON Roaster guns from their suppliers but to legally sell it to a non LEO they must do the SSE.
Be aware though , that if you want a non CA gun with a ten round mag it might be, for example, MA compliant gun with a 10lb trigger pull. Such was the case when I was looking for an M&P9 and nobody had one. One store said they could get one and have it here in two days and do the SSE. When I asked what model it is the number they gave me was for the MA model with a 10lb trigger.

What the hell is ammo imprinting?

Don't give the goofs in Mass any ideas.

You don't want to know...

It's an identifying mark on the bullet matched to that particular gun. The concept is wrought with problems, fallacies, and it is highly illogical. Surprised?

I typed something else, but I think it would get me banned on this forum. So, I changed it.

I am still 100% lost as to what ammo imprinting is! Maybe my Texas residency makes me immune to knowing.... :D
I think this is a reference to "microstamping."

Microstamping is a technology that stamps a unique mark on the case when the gun is fired. For some ridiculous reason, they believe this will solve crimes. We already have the technology to match a case to a gun so, this is really just another attempt to stop gun sales in CA.

Wow. They probably got the idea from watching the SF movie: Judge Dredd. If they'd have watched a couple more movies, they would know that once again, Mr. Rastoff hit the bull: they can already match the projo to the gun.

A lot of people really like the Ruger SR9c. It's what we were looking at and most likely would have bought but couldn't find one any where.
