I have a 38 smith and wesson Ctg Patten on top of barrel says pat. may 11 1880 jan. 3 1882 april 9 1889. Serial number 457387. My wifes grand father was a police officier and this is how I came upon it. Looking for year it was made and if its really worth keeping as a collector gun.

Chris, to really answer that, the members here would probably need a few very good photos of it to evaluate the condition, correct grips, variation of model, etc. If you are new to photo posting, there are instructions in the "forum office" section on how to use a photo hosting site.

Chris - 1st - welcome to the forum

2nd - what Kamerer said about photos is dead on but based on the patent dates its a 38 double action 4th model. A top break revolver with 5 shot fluted cylinder. Per SCSW 3rd - 216,300 were manufactured between 1895 and 1906 from serial number 322701 to 539000. It would be highly collectible in the proper condition. Thats where the photos come in. Also description of any additional markings.
