I have a beautiful model 29–2 N 5 digit serial number 6.5” gun, with the exception of the finish being bad on the front red ramp front sight. There is no other signs of finish wear on the entire gun. It looks to me like somebody had blackened the front sight out, and somebody else tried to clean it up l’m looking for suggestions on repair or replacement of that front sight,
Tom

You could try a little cold blue applied with a Q-tip. If that doesn't get it dark enough you could mask off the red plastic insert and the barrel and re-black the whole front sight with spray on sight black product. Either one of these is relatively easy to remove if you aren't satisfied. Of course you could always replace the front sight blade with a new one. Be careful driving the pin out and back in or it will look worse that the bare spots that you started with. Really nice 29-2 you have there.

The front sight and ramp are pretty easy to touch up with cold bluing and look good since they aren't polished. Try just touching it up first but you may have to carefully remove the bluing on the sides so it all looks the same. May need to lightly fine sand the sides in one direction. Would be a good time (before bluing) to replace the red insert if you can do it.

I agree....Source a new insert...Remove the old insert and clean the entire area well with alcohol....Let it dry and very lightly move a 0000 steel wool on the body of the sight only....Have a hairdryer ready and heat the end of the barrel/sight with the hair drier....Apply Oxpho-blue with a Q-tip and repeat the heat and apply five or six times. Immediately oil the end of the gun with Kroil and apply oil several times thereafter.

You won't even be able to tell it was done and the entire process will take less than 30 minutes. The biggest cost will be the new red insert.

"Brownells" & "Midway" might be a good place to look. They used to sell several different kits to make and fit your own. That wear looks like holster wear, and I would just touch it up with cold blue if mine. A close up picture in poor light can make something look worse than it maybe is.

I made my own. I don't think that they are available to purchase. You Tube has instructions on how to do it. It is done by the guy that owns Midway supply. I think his name is Larry Potterfield. Basically, you mix commonly available phenolic resin and color (both are available on Amazon) and pour them into the sight recess. You can make dams for either side of the sight from about any material that is rigid and will hold mold release agent. You must thoroughly mix the resin before adding the color as the color seems to block the curing if added with or before complete mixing. Ask me how I know. The resin had not set up after three days! I got to do it twice. Not hard just takes a little time.

So what is a good source for the red insert because I've not been able to find it
Various do it yourself methods from mixing epoxy with make your own powdered red plastic to a piece of a toothbrush. I recently read about liquefying plastic with the use of acetone. The original insert is held in by two tiny holes in the ramp that the insert flowed into. This is what I have used with good results, I had it laying around. Cut, force fit (with glue or epoxy) and trim. Not worrying about the bluing will make it much easier. You can do it several times until you get the hang of it and get it perfect.
