They are supposed to have some play. Check to see if the strain screw loosened up, that causes misfires.

As bountyhunter said, there should be some play in a hammer mounted firing pin. The strain screw he mentioned is the one at the bottom of the grip where your pinky would be. The screw sticks out toward the front of the gun. Tighten it; that's often the cause of light strikes from a garage gunsmith "trigger job".

I only had two light strikes on 1st load up, went through 50 round box fine after that. the screw is tight and also checked another 686 and pin is the same mine is a tad looser so i will have local smith look at it.

thank's.

UNLOAD your gun. Cock the hammer, and then look into the recess where the firing-pin falls. Instead of just a 'hole' for the hammer-nose, you will see there is a 'track' of sorts. A beveled raceway both above and below the hole. This is to guide the hammer-nose into place.

That up-down play is perfectly normal. What you may look for is side-to-side play. If that rivet that holds it in place has loosened, it may be able to be tightened. I had instructions on the old board for installing a new nose, and it's rivet. Perhaps that's archived somewhere?

Take a look at the primer strike indentation on the rounds. Light or off-center strikes will show up on the fired rounds if there is a problem. When you get a misfire compare the primer to those that went off. Post pics if you can.
