Hey guys, I took my new shield 9mm to the range this past weekend and I noticed that as I inserted magazines in the gun, they could wiggle with the slide back, and they wouldn't really "CLICK" in. I had to push them a couple times to make sure they were in all the way.

Is this normal?

Thanks!

Yes... With the slide locked open, the mag can wiggle just a bit...
And yes... The mags can be very Very VERY difficult to seat when brand new.
After it's been exercised for a few Hundred rounds, it will only be very Very (2 verys... not 3 :)) difficult to seat. :)

The mags should seat without any resistance when the slide is locked to the rear.

There is no reason it should be tough unless something was wrong with the mag, the gun, etc.

With the slide forward and a full mag, there will be a decent amount of pressure required to seat the mag.

Bought my shield this weekend. Having the same issue. I'm not concerned. Figure it will loosen up but it does take a very hard press to get the 8 round mag to seat

My mag release button was almost seized with rust. Maybe that would cause your problem.

My Shield is only 2 weeks (new). Only shot 50 rounds through it. With slide locked back, both mags seat easily and do have a little wiggle. With slide forward, the 8 round mag seats pretty easy still, but the 7 rounder is almost impossible to seat.

I have fully loaded both mags and are letting them sit for a while. Also, been racking the slide and dry firing a lot to help break things in.

After finding some threads and videos about the mag release rust issues, I pulled mine out and inspected. No rust at all. Have not really seen any recent threads on this issue. Is this something that S&W has now corrected. If so, how? The threads state this part is plastic overcoating a metal insert. If so, how does the rust permeate out to the outer surface. Since the outer surface is polymer, I did not oil mine.

You don't gently push the mag in, smack it into place. If it breaks (doubt it will) it was defective and customer service should be called.

Haven't shot my shield yet but just tried to insert the mag with full complement of bullets and the 7 round mag is crazy hard to seat. Had to use both thumbs on bottom of mag and 8 fingers on chamber to get it to seat. I don't have this issue when no bullets are in mag. Strange

Not really strange, when you think about how little free space there is when all rounds are loaded.
Take each mag and fill them completely and stand them up on a counter.
See that notch on the top rear of the mag? That's about how much further the bottom of the slide is going to try and push the top round (between 1/2 - 3/4 the depth of that notch) .
Push on the top round of each and you'll see how little free space (how far you can push that top round) there is in the 7 round mag, compared to that in the 8 round mag. Can you push the top round down to the bottom of that notch? How about half way? Probably not... Maybe not even 1/3 of that (by hand anyway).

That's why the Shield mags are so hard to seat, especially when brand new.
