We are in San Diego on vacation. While reading the morning paper over coffee this morning my bride saw the obituary. My former boss, friend and mentor for many years had succumbed to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). His passing was not unexpected as I had gotten a call about a month ago from my former secretary who told me of his condition. Sonny is the third friend I have lost this year. I guess that comes with getting older but it sure doesn't get any easier. I went down to JC Penny and bought a pair of slacks, shirt and tie (it was either that or wear my Levi's or swim trunks). Borrowed a pair of shoes and a belt from my dad and off to the funeral I go tomorrow at noon.

I guess the point to this thread, if there is one, is take a moment and appreciate the friends we all have left. Life is short so cherish the time you have allotted with those who mean the most. Probably the best thing about tomorrow will be seeing lots of old friends that have drifted away and I will not squander this opportunity to reconnect.

Sorry for your loss.True friends are very hard to come by. Love and appreciate the ones you have and don't forget to be one to others.

My sincere condolences, Capt. Steve.

In a couple of weeks, a group of 20 old friends are going to spend the day together. All of us are in our mid-50's and most of us have been friends since Junior High School. Several have known one another all their lives. Though most of us have gone in different directions, we've remained friends for 40+ years.

20 old friends are going to spend the day together . . . while we still can.

PLUS 10!

I just got back from the funeral. Sonny would have been proud, I even wore a tie (first time in 18 years). As hoped I reconnected with a lot of old friends and we vowed to keep in touch. Sounds a tad hollow but I believe we will. Thanks to one and all here for your support, it really means a lot. So call up an old friend, revel in the memories and make plans to create some more. Not much on this planet more precious than friends.
