My daughter in Louisville, KY, is strongly considering taking a CCL qualification course. If the instruction situation in KY is anything like in my state, there will be a few outstanding instructors, some goodish ones, and a whole lot of mediocre guys cashing in on the CCW instruction demand.

I'd sure appreciate any knowledgeable referrals to really good instructors in / around Louisville.

Living in Lexington, and not Louisville, I don't know any CCW instructors there. My suggestion would be to visit some of the larger gun shops. All the ones in Lexington offer the CCW course, so that is where I would start. BTW, I believe it's only an 8 hour class with range time (about 1 hour).

To OP,

Is your daughter's interest the result of what happened this past weekend? Just a point to consider, that coordinated disobedience apparently occurred at over a dozen malls involving several thousand disobedients! My best wishes to her.

Not a result of anything recent, other than a schedule change allowing her time to pursue it.
Will probably go to Knob Creek for her training, since their range fees are very reasonable for me to piddle about while she's doing the classroom portion. Probably take a .22 in addition to .38s and 9mms.

I don't live in Kentucky, so I can't help you with a referral.

I will make a suggestion, though.

Most concealed carry courses are bottom line basic in nature. More of a going-through-the-motions kind of thing. Doesn't much matter which one your daughter takes. Important thing is to qualify and get the license.

Then she can take her time finding knowledgeable people to instruct her in the finer points of shooting and carrying. A lot of ranges offer instruction. There are probably a few NRA-certified instructors in her area. And any quality gun/shooting club could probably point her in the right direction.

That's the way I'd go. My opinion only, okay?

Barry Laws at Open Range in Crestwood. State of the art range facilities. Heard their classes are top notch.

There is an indoor range in Louisville that offers the class and you can do your shooting there on site. It is TG&G and located off of 264 and Newburg Rd. area. Also, in Crestwood Ky, just east of Louisville is Openrange Sports that offers the class and has an indoor range.

Good to see another Kentuckyian on board. Just spent a couple days at UK hospital, mother in law fell breaking a few bones.great place once you find your way around. As far as instructors all info and testing comes from the manual so either one should do fine. After testing a range visit with 11 hits out of 20 from 9 yards, no problem either In the class I took, knowledge on cleaning your weapon must be included...... You going to the gun show in a few days in Lexington,.I forgot the dates but soon..Thanks for your service to this great Nation and State. I retired from the KY ARNG in Ashland.

I have been through 3 classes (not in KY). The initial CC training was pretty good, done by one of the local city PDs by a very knowledgeable Sergeant. The two renewal classes totally sucked, just an exercise in going through the motions and wasting time. At least the Texas CC law has now changed and doesn't require the useless renewal "refresher" training any longer. I suppose the CC trainers are none too happy about that change.

no refresher course between renewal here in Ky. Just take card you receive in mail and money to sheriff.

All the replies are appreciated. I'll be over there next weekend, taking her to a gun show to see what fits her hands and wallet.
Weather permitting, maybe we can also get some practice in, and a look at some of the ranges.

I've taught CHL classes in several states but no longer live in KY.
Maybe you already know, but the KY CHL course is NOT a class in how to shoot. If she needs a handgun shooting course, then please see she gets it BEFORE going to the CHL class, so she can listen to the laws which is what she really needs to get out of it, and not obsess about the shooting part, which is a snap for any competent handgun shooter.
The last time I was in KY (western), a friend was teaching a CHL class at the range, so I sat well back and watched the shooting. Fully 1/3 of the women in the class (and one man) were incompetent with a handgun, and one had never shot the gun she brought to the class.

Same problem here in Illinois .. when we first got CC a couple of years ago there was a group of instructors writing off the 16 hour course in much less then that amount of time .. little as 8 hours .. all those instructors and their students were dis-qualified .. instructors lost their privilege to teach and the students had to take the complete course over again .. and pay again for the course and the electronic finger prints .. and had to go through the waiting period for them to process the 2nd entry .. was up to them to try to get their money back .. and what I have heard many didn't ..

So I decided to take the course at the Junior College when it was first offered .. Figured it would be a quality course if run by the college ..the result was I had a instructor who has been a LEO for almost 40 years .. and his experience showed in his teaching ability .. also in his understanding of the law here in Illinois .. He gave a very interesting class interjecting real life experiences on the law part of the course .. was a Saturday / Sunday class and 15 of us had the whole building to ourselves .. he showed us the proper way to clear a building room by room .. then had us do the same using replica fire arms .. half the class died .. when going through the drill .. I made it through alive ..

Paid a few dollars more but got what I believe to be some of the best instruction that was available in my area .. I could have had 8 hours of the course wrote off because I have a DD214 .. or honorary discharge from the military .. USAF ..but hadn't had a safety course in a few years so took the complete course and it was well worth it ..

So try the colleges see if they offer a class .. it will be on the up and up .. ..

I'm in Illinois, and was an LE instructor (auxiliary, meaning I paid for all my own training, uniforms, and equipment). Been student or instructor at a lot of ranges over the years. My daughter is not a total stranger to handguns. My primary concern in looking for good instruction was in getting somebody who's been there, done that, and can get across the ethical, legal, and psychological aspects of deciding to carry, and possibly having to kill or maim another person. When I got my CCL here in IL, I went ahead and took the 8-hr classroom and abbreviated range portion of the course, and was fortunate enough to have an articulate, highly intelligent, 20-yr plus veteran police officer. We all need refreshers periodically, and this was a great one for me; hoping to find similar expertise in a course for my daughter.
Thanks again, all, for your thoughts and comments.
