Been out of the loop for awhile..heart re-furb..triple bypass and valve repair. But I am a sucker for PD marked revolvers and came across a S&W Model 10-5 .38 special today..SN#D1455xx. Square butt, pinned 4 inch barrel, minor holster wear. Marked on left side LOUISVILLE DEPT. POLICE. I have had a K.S.P. marked state trooper S&W in the past and this one today just spoke to me. It looks like it might have had a couple hundred rounds through it....locks up tight, case colors strong on hammer and trigger. Could tell some stories I am sure!

I will post some pics tomorrow. Looks like great weather for the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot this weekend! I visit Versailles every now and then..CenterFire Systems. Cut a lot of burley out on Oregon Road back in the day...fished Clear Creek at the Ky river.

Another old burley cutter here from Kentucky. Post some pics of that if you can.
There are several people on this forum from the central Kentucky area.

BTW there is a Kentucky State Police marked 686 at a gun shop in Frankfort and no I am not the owner of the shop and have no business interest in it. Just putting out the information.

Nice find, sounds like a good one! I like the service revolvers also and will grab em if given the chance.

Missed out on the KSP S&W686...called today and it was gone..good buy at $350 for someone.

Pics of LPD Model 10-5

If it works! I have a question about the grip panels..should they be checkered? They do not appear to have been sanded.

The right grip has 114924 stamped into the wood....are these replacements? Some of the grip frame markings are; on left side, X 25446, circled (22). Right side: triangle /A\, circled (7). The 25446 is also stamped on the yoke.

That's a neat find. I live about 20 minutes away from Louisville.

Does the serial number include 114924? If so, then these are original. If not, then they're replacements.

The other numbers you mentioned appear to be factory numbers used to re-combine parts after final processing at the S&W plant.

OOPS..a senior moment. This is a model 10-6 not a model 10-5.

Off subject I know but I saw a Kentucky State Police marked Model 60 no-dash at the gun show today. It was a good looking gun, but I think he wanted $700 for it.

The LPD traded the m-10s in on the 67s. They also issued some 60s, 66s, and 29s. There were also a large number of other various revolvers stamped with the LPD emblem that were confiscated and released to the department for official use by the courts.

Officers were allowed to purchase their issued revolvers (not the confiscated ones) when the department went to 6906s in 1990. The price was $125 each, no matter which one you bought, including the 4inch 29-2s.

Thanks to the LEO veterans and the local lore on this and other LPD handguns. As I said earlier..if this one could talk it might have some interesting stories! This one seems to have been well cared for..never hit the pavement as far as I can tell. The un-checkered grips are interesting.
