M&P 15-22 Extractor Gone

8 years later same problem

Notice this post is from 2009. It's now 2017 and I just had the same. I went to shoot my new 15-22 for the first time at a steel math Saturday. All was going well until around round 160-170 when I started to have failure to extract problems. Well that ended my day. When I got back home on Sunday, I took a look at the rifle and the extractor was missing along with the spring and whatever else goes with it. Need to contact S&W Monday. You would hope after 8 years they would have fix the problem. My disappointed. At least my SW22 Victory is running like a champ.

I still have the original S&W 15-22 extractor and extractor spring in my 10 month old rifle but have a spare Exact Edge extractor made by VOLQUARTSEN and a spare spring purchased on ebay just in case so I wouldn't need to ship it back for an extraction issue.

Contact S&W today about the missing extractor. It looks like they are shipping the parts now. They are sending me all the missing parts but are out of stock on the springs. They say 5-7 business days for the spring to ship. We will see what happens when the new parts are installed. I'll run a box of 325 automatch. Hopefully all will go well.

I've had mine for almost 2 years now and have put around 3000'ish rounds down range with no issues. Not until recently that is. Not sure exactly what happened but it does sound like an OOB round. I was sighting in after scope change and on about the 5th shot there was a loud pop next to my cheek and tip of finger. My son who was behind me said he saw something fly out to the right into the marsh. Upon looking at the chamber I noticed the bolt was back slightly and there was black around it. I then tried to clear it and it wouldn't extract the casing. That's when I noticed the missing extractor and plunger as well as the mangled casing. Now the shot just prior to the failure was one of those shots that just barely had enough oomff behind it to get it out of the end of the barrel and rolls about 20 feet and stops in front of you. I've had a LOT of those using the Armscor .22 LR ammo. Not sure if it just didn't have enough to open and load a round securely or what. Now I was target shooting so it was like 1 shot every 3-5 seconds not quick fire. Here's a few pics of what I saw. I already received the new parts and the plunger everyone seemed to like looks nothing like the original piece.

Lesson to be learned here, cheap ammo is not always a bargain! My M&P15 has over 10,000 rounds through it without a single failure that was the guns fault. I got a few light strikes after changing the trigger to a cheap unit. False economy there too!
Point being, I have always used premium ammo. Federal Automatch, CCI SV, or Eley CMP Special.
