Hi. I am going to purchase a M&P 15-22 very soon and cannot wait. I am new to all of this. A guy i know gave me an old .22 and i had so much fun with it at the range. I started reading up on guns, etc and ended up going hunting this past weekend with a Binelli 12 gauge and it was crazy.
My question is

Can anyone lead me to the right place to find a decent scope for my 15-22. I saw this one and was wondering if i can get some feedback on it. Also i bought wincester bullets and was wondering if those are good. I heard remmingtons suck.

How much money are you wanting to spend on a scope? If it were me I would stick to one with a name brand. When it comes to optics you really get what you pay for same is true for the rimfire ammo

It really depends on the type shooting you intend to do. If you'll be mostly plinking at 50 yards or less, then a 1x red dot is fast and fun, or a low power scope.

You might consider going to a gun show and seeing for yourself. The inexpensive scopes are usually on a lot of tables. The one thing I have noticed about 'compact' 3-9x scopes is that some bend and/or tend to be a bit fuzzy around the outer third.

Vortex Strikefire (about $140) is a decent red dot sight that has a 2x capacity screw-on ring. I put one of these on my M4 and I'm happy so far. This is the one that will make it's way to the 15-22 after I upgrade the M4 optic.

Also have a Burris XTS-135 that works nicely too, but it has no magnification.....it also cost more ($230) Can't see putting anything expensive on a .22.

Avoiding hollow point ammo is a good idea, the 15-22 will shoot it but the maker becomes an issue, some brands of hollow point are problematic. Learning how to load your magazine is VERY important too, look in this forum for some more details on loading the magazine, I was given some great advice here and it's worked great ever since.

Some people here say Remington ammo is not good for these rifles but mine has shot it without any issues.

I'm in the same boat as you, scaredstr8. I recently bought one of these great guns and hope to squirrel and rabbit hunt with it as well (I assume that's your plan as you mentioned hunting). I hope you get some good feedback on scopes as I'm unfamiliar with what I should look for too; I hope to find something decent around $100.

Many others here have tested theirs out much more than me, but my 1 time out with it so far I've had:

3 jams with CCI Mini Mags (out of 50 rounds)
0 jams with Federal Bulk (out of 50 rounds)

Again that was my first time with the gun, first time loading the clips, so problems could have been my own. I did this after hunting yesterday so didn't have time for more testing, just wanted to see what it was like while I had the chance :)

Good luck!

its just all a matter of what fit your personal preference. some people like red dots some people like the traditional scope. IMO the scope would be more well suited for hunting, something with a little magnification.

Hey scaredstr8, I'm back after chatting with a hunting friend of mine. He is leading me in the direction of a 2x7 scope for a max size for this rifle. I seem to agree as people say this gun isn't for shooting over 100 yards anyway; a 2x7 seems to be quite enough magnification for that.

He mentioned I may not like the red illumination of that Barska. What I plan to do is find out if any local stores carry that brand and try to see it in person. That 3x9 seems quite long too and he says a 2x7 should be a little shorter, which I will probably like.

I notice some scopes say 'fogproof'. I am in Wisconsin and will be hunting in cold weather, so I may look for one that claims to be fogproof; not sure if that would be important for you or if that claim is even worthwhile, but just another thing to think about.

Bah, another 5 days before I get out to the range!

That you all for the feedback. I cant wait any longer for the damn store to get this gun in. I email the place everyday. I just bought a remington 597 for 150 bucks with a nice scope 2 mags and a muzzle break home made by a gunsmith and the gun is georgeous no scratches. I feel like a puss* shooting .22 but i really like that 15-22 it was really the first gun i laid eyes on in the store on the advertisment poster. I go to the range 1 time a week on sunday's and i think i am going to join a club so i can shoot in competitions because i am not good at any other sport lol. After i get used to shooting i need to upgrade to something else. A shotgun is pointless but i say any gun is pointless if i am just going to go to the range right?? What do you guys suggest get another gun, join the club, get property upstate etc.

I suggest all of the above!! A shotgun is far from pointless! I wanted a shotgun, and like you wanted it for dual purpose in order to feel like I'm getting more for my money(my reasoning anyway). Well I bought a Benelli M2 so it would be a good bird gun but I could also try my luck at clays. Well to say the least I LOVE shooting clays! I did take it out deer hunting this year but didn't see anything close enough to use it :(

This is why I bought the 15-22 as well... HUGE fun at the range but also accurate enough that I can small game hunt with it (looking forward to that in the upcoming weeks).

So my thought is to keep on buying! I'd definitely join a club if you want the competition; I bet it's very fun. I'd definitely buy the land though if I had the money :)

My 2 cents for ya.
