I've recently learned that 5.56mm self defense rounds have a much lower risk of going through my house and then on through the neighbors house, than a 9mm JHP. I'm considering getting a stripped M&P receiver and building a pistol for home defense. I've never shot a modern sporting pistol, so I have no idea about recoil or night time muzzle flash.

I fear the lawyers would hang me if I had to use it for home defense, but the research of over penetration presents a strong case for neighborhood safety.

What are your thoughts on this.

I think the use of an AR15 pistol would depend on the skill level of the person employing the firearm. I've shot AR pistols and personally do not like them at all. Even when using a single point sling and pushing out, I find it uncomfortable to use or get decent follow up shots. I also do not see the advantage of using a firearm that requires two hands to use effectively in a close residential quarters situation. I'd rather use my 9mm pistol knowing I can get effective and repeatable hits on target using one hand or two. I also prefer using a traditional pistol because I can have one hand free to operate a telephone, a flash light, open doors, grab/herd family into the fall back room. IMO, if you're concerned about over penetration buy some good defensive frangible rounds.

Maybe a FN Five-SeveN MkII or a Kel-Tec PMR 30 would be a better option. Fast moving .22 caliber projectile, pistol form factor, large standard capacity mag.

I think it may be worth owning even if you use it for outside the home in a SHTF situation. If your state laws allow it GET it before they ban it!

You make a good point. I prefer quick rounds on target vs the one stop shot philosophy (not knocking the guys that do). I've never shot a rifle round without a stock so I have no idea what it would be like. I did get to shoot a full auto ar-15 SBR, but it had a "high end" compensator on it. It felt like no recoil, but I wouldn't shoot it without safety glasses. There was a wind blast to the face for every round.
I say "high end" because he said it cost about $125. I don't know enough about compensators to remember the brand. He said there's set screws to adjust the vertical and horizontal movement during recoil.

This project is on hold anyway. I just got offered a like new Walther PPK stainless steel, and I got to jump on it.
