I'm wanting to get into competition shooting. My local range has USPSA matches just about every Thursday. I'm looking for a good gun to start out with in the production division.

Would it be better to go with the 1.0 pro 5 inch barrel or go with the newer 2.0 version in fde with the 5 inch barrel?

I like the new version a lot but don't like the safety. My Pc shield has a safety, it's so small I don't even use it so it's not a big deal. The safety on the 2.0 his huge and I could see myself hitting it when firing.

Also is there a difference in trigger between these two models?

Another thing is, I could use my glock 17 duty weapon and wait for S&w to come out with the 2.0 in a pro model.

My advice is to use the G17, shoot a few matches and see which division you want to compete in. For your first match with the G17, you would be in production which means you download your magazines to 10 or shoot limited division minor caliber. Minor caliber will give you less ponts outside of the center, but the added capacity can give you less to think about for the first match or two. After you get a feel for it, pick the division that you want to shoot and get a gun that both you and your bank account can agree on.

Thank you for the advice!

I'm using my M&P .40 4.25 for Production right now while my teenage son uses my XDm 3.8 9mm. I'm toying with the idea of getting an XDm 5.25 Comp 9mm to use for Production over the M&P.

I agree with using what you have at first to get your feet wet vs rushing to buy anything. Talk to other competitors, see what they use/like/dislike, etc. before you buy anything.

There's nothing wrong with staying in Production until you decide to invest the $$$ to move up. Production is a heck of a lot of fun, and easier for a beginner to get hooked.
