I found this guy in the used gun case at my LGS a few weeks ago. It was in amongst the plastic wonders. It was wearing gaudy plastic "ivory" stocks. It looked so forlorn I had to rescue it. Just couldn't leave there, right? All the numbers match except the stocks of course. I found these in my stash box. Seem to match the gun really well, down to the chip at the bottom of the left panel. It's a little finish challenged but locks up tight and no end shake. It's a keeper and found a forever home. Not a bad deal at $370.00 OTD. SN C 303XXX puts it in 1954-1956 range. I'd like to narrow it down a little more. Here are a couple of pics.

Very nice I look the older guns that have the 1/10 th inch sight. Mine from 1954 I still shoot my best qualification score with.

Congrats on taking that one home. For reference, C314516 (a 2" round butt) shipped in October 1954 and C316025 (a 4" square butt) shipped in November 1954. But as you know, S&W did not necessarily ship in numeric order...

It was very noble and self sacrificing of you to rescue that revolver.

Good choice on the grips .
