I was window shopping online here and came across a S&W .40 cal. pistol for $240 at a LGS. No box, one magazine, used obviously. They're not open until tomorrow so I may go down there & check it out. I never had one so I'm not even sure if I want one. Is there anything in particular that I should look at if & when I get my greasy dirty fingers on it? Now, my friend has one in 9mm and that thing is a bear to load. Like eating Jello with chop sticks. Is this how the .40 caliber magazines are like, too? There were some police trade-ins a couple months ago for about the same price I believe. I forget the name of the dealer. It's hard to read the info on their tag, but I think it says 15 round magazine. I don't know if it's a Shield or what. The only definite is that it's black. (Sorry, but that's all I got in the info dept.) I've never owned a pistol in that flavor so I haven't any info on price/availability of .40 caliber ammo at today's prices. Any info is appreciated. If I should buy the gun do yinz know if it would prefer FMJ bullets or anything special? I'm sorry for over-loading you guys with so much info on the gun, but that's all I have for now. It's about a 15-mile drive so today I'll be working on getting a pre-approval for a loan for gasoline.
Thanks for any help.

IMO, the mags for the M&P40 are not particularly hard to load except for the last few cartridges. If you have to fully load them, just use a mag loader. I usually load five rounds at the range, sometimes ten. A loader is not needed for that, but it sure takes the stress off your fingers. I have the Uplula and consider it well worth the small cost. I originally bought one for my daughter and found myself using it often enough that I felt compelled to buy my own. :D

The M&P should work fine with anything you put in it (factory loads). I even shoot cast bullets in mine and have no problems.

Good luck with your pre-approval. ;)

M&P .40 caliber

I own three forty cal guns and only one 9mm.

A Shield40 is my EDC and M&P40FS is my woods gun.

My only concern is .40S&W ammo will get hard to find and more expensive.

My guess is that it’s a full size police trade in. I have the compact, and have had the full size, and they are nice pistols. No particular problems of note, I shoot cast, jacketed, and plated bullets from mine with no issues.

I’ll second (or third) the Uplula mag loader. I have used one for years, and wouldn’t be without it now.

The price on that pistol is a good deal, if it’s in good shape. And if down the road you decide you don’t like the .40, ( I do)you’re only a barrel swap away from a 9mm.

Good luck, and good shootin’.

You can get a simple Glock-like mag loader for about $10 on Amazon.

Great gun that chews up any ammo. I also have the uplula. There are probably other loader options out there as well. And at that price, it is a steal. I am looking at a second one today.

I gave one of my 9mm mag loaders to a friend of mine. Coincidentally for his M&P Shield. Amazing how that cheap piece of plastic makes light work out of loading a magazine. Those mags that they're putting in the EZ 9 & .380 can really spoil ya!
As far as the pistol's concerned, if it loads & shoots without any issues I'll probably grab it if it's there tomorrow. It's gonna be a toss up: I need my kitchen ceiling repaired, so do I throw away good money on stupid home repairs or get a new (to me) gun? Stupid question, as I'm on a Forum full of gun powder addicts questioning whether or not to buy a new gun! I don't own a .40 but I've heard they're a fun little caliber.

Well,if the kitchen ceiling isn’t leaking or about to fall down and injure someone, I’d say your choice is clear.

Thanks ACORN, you saved me a trip down there! I couldn't tell by the pic in their ad online. Just as well; one less caliber to deal with.
As far as my kitchen ceiling goes, a lot has to do with exactly WHO is standing under it. If it's some annoying insurance-selling lizard from New Zealand, that little green dude's going down!

I use my Glock mag loader to load my FS M&P 40 mags.
OP, do a Google search for "LAW ENFORCEMENT TRADE INS" and hold on! All these online stores just received another load of LE Trade in guns. I saw FS M&P 1.0 40's selling for $299. They are un-issued with box, 3-15 rd. mags, night sights, etc.
Glock G22.3, G22.4, G23.3, and G23.4, are starting at $325. They all come with various accessories.
I just recently bought this un-issued G22.4 for $359 (pic below).
Good Luck

I did a search but didn't see an outlet that were selling the models you speak of at the prices you quote. Do you have a link for that specific site ?

I will go look again.
I should have been more specific. When I bought my G22.4 just recently (like I stated in my post) I should have stated it was 2 weeks ago when I saw them. That's when I bought my G22.4 from GideonTactical.com.
Another site that sells A LOT of LE Trade in guns is Gunbroker.com .

Thanks. I will check out Gideon. I've used GB for many years having won auctions for several LE trade ins there over the years and recently a GLOCK 21 Gen 4 and the M&P40 which I did a review on in this segment.
