M&P 40 vs Hornady critical defense ammo

My FS 40 M&P 1.0 will not run Hornady critical defense ammo. If I have one in the tube, it will fire and eject the empty. The next one in the mag will jam the slide open as it’s moving forward and hangs on the feed ramp of the barrel.

My FMJ ammo feeds just fine.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong or how to correct this other than changing ammo?

Clean gun and magazines. Lube gun per manual. Be sure slide channels are clean and lubed. While you have the mags apart, check for burrs. Use DRY silicone lube in magazines, and wipe off.

Is the feed ramp smooth with no burrs or roughness ?

Once in a while you'll find a bullet that, because of shape or profile, doesn't feed as reliably. If the things that OKFC05 suggested don't help, get some different ammo and use up the Hornadys for practice.

If they don't feed reliably, you'd be better off using something else, anything else, even FMJ is better than having your pistol jam when you really need it.

I know it's hard to find defensive ammo now without paying $2 a round,
but try to find some Federal HST, Remington Golden Saber or Winchester Ranger.

This does not help but I once owned a small pistol with a similar problem. I never could fix the problem but carried it with a hollow point in the tube and FMJ in the magazine. Functioned reliably that way.

Unfortunately defensive ammo has less angled bullet shape, mostly not having the nose.
As other mentioned, first be sure all is lubed properly and feed ramp is clean. I'd suggest to polish it to "mirror like".
If this doesn't help - test other defensive ammo.

Conversely, my very early M&P .40 runs everything with no issues. Mine is from the first production run.

My M&P 2.0 shield 40 eats anything I feed it. When I first got my SD40VE it wouldn't feed flat nose style bullets. After S&W polished the feed ramp it too will function on any ammo. If the feed ramp looks like it still has machine marks on it, that may be the cause. Hope just a good cleaning does it for you.

Do I use a metal polish for SS, aluminum, etc?

"Dremel?" CRINGE! I doubt there's another commonly available tool that's done more damage to firearms. Post #7 has a better solution: factory service.

Before you do that though, how many rounds through the gun? While we like to believe that the items are ready to go right out of the box, like many mechanical things, guns need to be broken in. Minimum of 200 rounds of ball, 400 is better to smooth things out and get things working like they should be.

BTW, you polish feed ramps if, and only if, you can see visible tool marks or defects on the ramp. Factory service might not be your first choice of solution, but it beats ruining a barrel.

Prepare these:
- sand paper - 800, 1000, 1200
- Flitz paste
- snap cap or dummy round.

Wrap your dummy or snap cap with sand paper and work on feed ramp with 800, then 1000 and 1200. Polish with back and worth moves, the same direction as live round -> magazine - chamber.
Then finally put the Flitz paste and clean in with microfiber cloth. You should get a mirror like surface.
If you regularly clean it after each shooting session (with good solvent), it will stay in a great shape forever.
