I have a M&P 40 Compact for my EDC , and I was thinking about adding a Vortex red dot , but I don't know what model would be best for an EDC gun . (Razor , Viper , or Venom ) Anyone know first hand what model would be best for EDC ?

TIA

Best? Define Best! There are plenty of options. There are also plenty of reviews. I suggest you read a few and perhaps you'll come up with specific questions.

What is "best" is too subjective and you'll get recommendations for just about all of them.

Good Luck

First thank you for your reply . Best choice for Concealed Carry . Would the Razor be too large for concealed carry . I know from what I have read that the razor is a more stout built unit than the other two that I mentioned , but would it be a poor candidate for a EDC gun ?

I have carried my M&P CORE 40 with a Deltapoint on it IWB and it was good but some holsters might need some modification as the optic sits in front of the rear sight. Don

Don , Thank you very much for your reply , and help . I am not able to comfortably carry IWB , so something as large as the core , I think would be hard to conceal in a OWB holster . Am I wrong in this thinking ? Also is the m&p 40 compact slide too small for a red dot ?

You could mount a red dot, in place of the rear sight. You'll want a red dot that comes on automatically, as soon as the gun starts to move. You won't have time to turn it on, in an emergency. If you find one that doesn't shut off automatically, you could just turn it on when you carry. Just make sure you change out the battery often. Also, if the dot fails, you'll have a problem, as there won't be a rear sight. I have a 9 compact with fiber optic sights and it's staying that way, until a better, foolproof idea comes along.

I looked at the website for all three sights and they all list an auto-shutoff timer and two have the buttons on the side where they might get bumped during carry or when racking the slide. IMHO neither feature is optimal for a carry gun.

How did you intend to mount the red dot? Mill the slide or replace the rear sight with a red dot mount?

I'm going to have to get some time behind a red dot , before I make a decision .
I found that a red dot on a pistol takes time and practice. Start with a red dot on a range or competition pistol first.

Thank you very much for your help . You make some good points .

L&M can install taller sights to cowitness with the red dot. The red dot can be mounted in front of the rear sight.

I like the Trijicon RM04. No batteries to worry about. I'm using this setup on my M&P 9 PC and love it. If Smith doesn't come out with a Compact CORE version this year, I'll let L&M fix me up.

Thank you for the input . I think milling the slide is the best way to go . May be as time goes on we will see more guns coming from the factory red dot ready .

Sigs supposed to release their RX320's this year in both fullsize and compact. I hope this is the push that Smith needs to release the M&P 9 Compact as a CORE model also. The M&P with the small grip insert just fits me great.

First let me preface my comments by saying I AM NOT a Gabe Suarez "fan boy".
I do however believe in giving credit where credit is due and Gabe has spent A LOT of trigger time with red dot edc pistols and it might benefit anyone considering a red dot edc pistol to take a look at his book Red Dot Combat Pistols (currently being offered for a free download to registered WT members).

As to the OPs original query.
I know that it was not one of the options you asked about but if you want one of (if not) the best MRDS for an edc pistol you may consider the Trijiicon RM07.

A properly mounted RM07 with proper co-witness sights is about as "fool proof" an optical system as you can get.

Although it can be turned off there's no need to as a battery will last over a year.

It can be set to auto adjust for lighting conditions or set at one of eight levels.

The likelihood of "accidentally" turning it off is astronomically small as both + - controls must be pressed simultaneously to power it down.

They are so rugged that they can be used to rack the slide if necessary (check the Trijicon NRA Convention video).

And if (like anything made by man) it does fail you have the proper co-witness sights to "finish the job".

Several holster makers currently offer holsters for RMR mounted pistols.

IWB or OWB holster is pretty much a personal choice based somewhat on physique. I personally do not care for IWB holsters but they do work great for some. I've tried several from top name makers (Kramer, Milt Sparks, Mitch Rosen, etc.) and just don't like them.

As far as a C.O.R.E.being hard to conceal, again that is probably a function of physique and dress. I'm about 5' 8" @ 160 pounds and carried a 1911 for years (full size or Commander) and with the proper holster and belt never had any problems concealing them or being comfortable.

I recently replaced my "off the farm" EDC Colt Stainless Lightweight Commander XS (not XSE) with a M&&P 40 PC Ported C.O.R.E. and have no problem easily concealing it.

As sight focal plane length is not an issue with a MRDS a smaller pistol might wok better for some folks without any loss of functionality. A good friend has a RM07 equipped G19 that he carries in a Blade-Tech IWB made for RMR equipped pistols that has a cover for the RMR. In the last year or so he has used it in two 500+ round SI classes as well as thousands of practice rounds and it has never had a single burp. (We compared his G19 today to my PC Ported and it is quite a bit smaller.)

One final thought concerning the learning curve. It has been demonstrated that with proper co-witness sights that curve is very short. My friend with the G19 at first did not have any sights at all and told me just today that he was at first bobbing all over trying to find the dot. He put proper co-witness sights on and now it's instinctive to find the dot. Index the front and rear sights like you have for thousands of shots and the dot is sitting right there on it. Do the "hand off" to the dot and you're good to go.

Take care
James

James , Thank you very much , for all that information , and the pic of your ported C.O.R.E. . That looks like an awesome set up . I would like to have the slide on my M&P 40C milled for the Vortex Razor , or Venom . The C.O.R.E. would be great , but I think for me the M&P 40 C , would be easier for me to conceal .

Priced getting mine milled today. $150. The place is about 25 miles from me so I won't pay shipping. I have the mount ordered to fit the rear slot from EGW and will try that first. Don

Not a 100% fool proof i had to return mine the first month I had it. It kept turning off during a string of shots. Rack the slide and it usually came back on. Amazon sent me a return box and also put my money back it the bank the same day they shipped the box to me. I ordered a Deltapoint the same day from them. Don
