Yesterday, I traded in my Gen 3 Glock 17 for a used, but like new M&P 9 Pro 5" at my favorite LGS. I had the flock for a while, and I could shoot it reasonably well, however the grip design never really grew on me, feeling a bit too big in my hand. As such, I did some looking around at other options, considering both the Beretta APX, and the H&K VP9 as well. I was leaning toward the VP9, having demoed one last week, but then I spotted the M&P 9 Pro in the gun case. I immediately liked the feel in my hand over the Glock, in addition to what I consider to be a superior trigger pull, break and reset. As this is strictly a range competition gun for me, I considered the 5" barrel to be a plus, not to mention a superior set of sights, and the fact that it came with the original case, paperwork, backstraps, and 4 mags for a total price of $430 OTD, less the trade value of the G17, was what ultimately sealed the deal.
Now, for those of you who saw my story about a purchase that went bad about a month ago over in the revolver forums, on this gun I did an extra thorough inspection before purchase, though the LGS I was dealing with this week is always beyond helpful if and when something goes wrong or I find damage on the gun after the fact, not to mention that every firearm they sell gets inspected by their gunsmith before being out out for sale, so an extra thorough inspection was not really necessary. Anyway, as I stated above the gun is like new, showing almost no wear at all, save for light copper fouling in the bore, and that's about it. The exterior finish was near perfect, and there were very little signs of use on the gun. The mags told a different story however: The light grey followers showed plenty of wear marks, so I know the gun must have been used a fair bit.

My choice was proved correct, as an afternoon range trip yielded much tighter grouping than I was ever able to shoot with the Glock, and I am very happy with this gun.

As to my questions: I dove into the SCSW 4th edition to glean any info on this model I could, including manufacture date. According to the book, the date code on the box should be telling, and mine showing 032316, suggests a build date of March 23 2016, which is supported by the serial number prefix HML in the dates by serial number section of the book as well. The book however does state that the particular model I have, SKU # 178048 was only produced from 2010-2014, despite the date code, and S&W's website still offering them for sale (I think). Can someone please confirm to me whether I am interpreting the date code wrong? I had thought that the M&P 9 CORE had replaced the M&P 9 Pro, as the book indicates, however I may be mistaken.

Also, I might try IDPA in my free time this summer, and I am looking for a suggestion for a good holster. I have found a lot of holsters for the M&P 9, but none for the 5" so far.

This is my first M&P pistol, however not my first S&W semi-auto, so any and all other pertinent info is appreciated. Thanks.

Blade Tech and Comp Tac make holsters for the 5", sometimes listed as the 9L

No the CORE haven't replaced the PRO, my interpretation of the date of manufacturer is the same as yours, but you can call S&W and they will verify it for you. The marks on the mag followers are pretty common on new guns. I'm glad you are liking the Pro I didn't, mine had an awful trigger.

Thanks for the reply, I am going to assume the date code is correct then, though I wish I had the test cartridge (the only thing missing from the set) to verify. Also, I cannot confirm whether or not somebody had previously did trigger work on my gun, though based on how mine feels in comparison to my former G17 or even the Beretta APX that I did a side by side comparison in store yesterday, I wonder if the former owner did. It does not have an Apex or other aftermarket trigger in it (yet :)),so I can tell you it's at least not modified to that point, though it may have a spring kit in it. All I can say is that it definitely has what I would call a clean break with, and fairly short reset. I will stand by my assertion that it is better than the G17, and will also offer that I am primarily a DA revolver guy, so my version of a great trigger may differ from yours. In that realm, compared to my model 28-2 with a SA pull of a scary 1.5-2 lbs (it's been performance tuned and polished) with no take-up at all, I'd judge, by feel alone, that the trigger pull on the 9 Pro is around 5 lbs, with only a tiny amount of take-up, which is acceptable to me.

Generally, I consider S&W guns of all types to have excellent factory triggers compared to some of their competitors. If you want to see a tough factory trigger, try the Beretta M9. Please don't take this a hating or griping, however despite being a big fan of Beretta, especially the 92 series pistols (I have owned 4 of them of different variants), but that trigger is horrible.

S&W doesn't include the test fire shells anymore that might be another indicator that yours is recent.

Since when? The 617 I bought recently came with one, though that one was manufactured in 2010...

I don't know exactly but some guns that I bought between 15-17 didn't came with the envelope, neither the shield 45 that bought last month. IDK if this affect all the line of just M&P IDK. I remember reading about it here too.

I'm going to say they stopped in 2015, I bought 2 pistols in 2015, one had the case, the other did not. I also bought one in 2014 that had the case, and another in 2016 that did not.

If the SN's match, trust the date code on the box.

The lack of the spent case is well documented if you search. My M&Ps are from 2013 and the box code matches the spent case envelope.

The C.O.R.Es are not a replacement but have the milling for an optic and suppressor height sights.

FWIW, ya done good!!

As to the trigger in your Pro, it may /may not have had some after market attention. Sounds like a stock Pro trigger pull to me though. I can tell you that the triggers in my older 5" pro and more recent CORE were both WAY better than any stock Glock I've owned. Even better than my Glocks with moderate trigger work (i.e internal polishing, springs and ghost disconnector upgrades) I'm generally a "apex sear" guy when it comes to M&P's but I have been content with my pro series triggers right out of the box.
p.s. I think you'll like that Pro just fine!

I agree with your assessment on the trigger, and I honestly don't think any work has been done to my trigger, everything looks stock, but cannot say for sure. From what I have read in last couple days, it seems like some of the Pros leave the factory with great triggers, others can be gritty or just feel bad. I would be curious to know exactly how much of this gun is hand fit and finished in the Performance Center as claimed elsewhere, and whether human element causes variation from gun to gun.

As to my liking of the gun:

This is no real spectacular shooting by any stretch, but for a gun I had owned for less than an hour, I can shoot it fairly well. This target is 10 rounds at 25 feet, shot from a standing position indoors in a dimly lit range where you can't always see where you are hitting. For scale reference, the 6 ring is 4.5 inches in diameter. To me, to be inside that ring with 8 out of 10 shots, with a gun that I have never shot before, is really good. This is not my best group of the day either, rather one of the first, and the only one I snapped a photo of.

The only other polymer gun I have shot this well was an original Springfield XD 9 that I foolishly traded for a Ruger SP101 in 22LR that I thought I wanted. Boy was I wrong...

I'm a lefty, and use a Safariland 5197-819 S&W M&P 5 (30 14) for IDPA, etc. for my M&P CORE 5 inch.

Works great, excellent retention, but comes out easy on a draw.

Will
