Thinking about getting my first semi auto after buying 3 Smith revolvers, including a 642.

Looking at the pricing, the LCP is $289 at Bud's and the M&P 9C is $454 at Bud's.

I realize this is a Smith forum, but is it worth the difference? The LCP seems to be well regarded from what I've read.

the difference is one is a .38 and one is a 9mm. Why are you not looking at the S&W Bodyguard 380?

Ive handled a ruger lcp with a crimson trace fitted. It was nice but i think i would still go for the bodyguard 380.

The M&P 9C is a 9mm and the LCP is a .380. It would be more appropriate to compare a Ruger LC9.

Good point. I just did check them out online and seems like a nice gun. Could not find one for sale though. Checked Bud's, Gander Mtn., Cabella's, etc. Any ideas on where and cost? Bud

Why do you want to go down to .380? I have had both the LCP and a 642 and sold them both. I have a new (to me) 442 coming to me now. I do not think you get anything by going to the LCP. It only holds two more rounds and they are weaker. I never shot the LCP as well as the 642 and I do not think they are are really any eaiser to hide. Both just go into a pocket.

No matter what, the LCP and M&P 9C are two very different guns in different classes. Most people cannot hide a 9C in their pocket so it is really a compact carry, not a pocket gun. I do not think you will really be happy with the LCP in any matter, especally as your first semi-auto.

I have an LCP as well but is not a primary carry. As I have read in many other posts - if it is not at least a caribur that a LEO would have as a primary, neither should you. In my book that is a .38 or 9MM minimum. If you like the LCP look at the LC9.

I have both. The 9c is much more accurate that the LCP. I can hit an apple at 10 yards with the 9c. If I throw the LCP, I could probably hit the apple too. The 9c is my EDC, attire permitting. I carry the LCP in my front pocket, if I can’t carry the 9c.

I have both, and the 9C is NOT a pocket gun, but accurate & dependable. My LCP has been back to Ruger twice for the same failure to extract problem and I've been waiting for a replacement from Ruger, I guess they could not fix it.

As to the LCP you are better off w/a J frame Smith. It is only slightly larger, packs more punch, fits in a pocket easily, and is not subjected to all the problems that seem to plague the tiny .380's, to include the S&W new380.
