Is there much difference between these two? I find my XDM a bit thick and heavy to carry comfortably.

I'd much rather have the M&P. Better grip, no grip safety and more appealing pistol.

Handle one for yourself. I think the M&P9c is marginally smaller. Definitely not enough to justify the action of getting rid of your xdm compact. If I were you I'd go for the M&P Shield.

I have both a M&P40c and a XD40sc. The M&P definitely fits the hand better and I like the feel of the trigger surface better BUT...

MY XD is more accurate and I like the tacile feel of the loaded and cocked indicators for night use (try looking down the M&P loaded indicator hole in the dark). The grip safety is also comforting (why do people complain about it on an XD but never on a 1911 or old centennial... huh? huh?). If it makes any difference, the XD mag release is ambidextrous as-is w/o taking the gun apart to change it.

Like others said, rent or borrow one and try it then decide... I'm still trying to make up my mind.

Selecting a pistol is very subjective.
When shopping for Compacts I chose the XDM9c over the M&P9c for several reasons not worth mentioning in detail. They both shot great for me, but the general subjective feel (both in my hand and in IWB) of the XDM was better (for me).

To me, a few oz of weight aren't critical. If it was, I wouldn't have gotten the Shield for pocket carry (side-lining my other much lighter 9mm pocket pistol). ;)

I have the XDm 3.8 compact in .40, the XD9sc, and my cousin has the M&P9c. All three are wonderful firearms. The slight weight difference on the XDm seems to help in making the gun that much more of a pleasure to shoot. I just picked up my first S&W. I got the Shield in 9mm.
Choose the one that feels the best in your hand. Any one of those will serve you well.
