I love my M&P 15-22 and my 9mm Shield! That said, the M&P 15 Sport sells for 650.00 and the DPMS (similar model) with dust cover and forward assist sells for the same amount.

In your opinion (and/or from your experience), honestly, would you say that either rifle (given the 2 DPMS added features) is a better quality for the same money?

Thanks!

This is a S&W site, so........Either way, get the Sport and you get all the S&W backing of the rifle. I think it's pretty much been proven that most people don't need a dust cover and FA for the average Joe.

Also, do some research. The Sports can be had for around $550.

The DPMS Oracle which is the flat top ORC with forward assist and
dust cover can often be found on sale for $499.00 or even a bit less
at RK and DHs. Their warranty is three years instead of most
company's one year.

Makes sense. Thanks.

The only experience I've had with DPMS is I have a friend who has one and doesn't care for it. I don't know specifically why.

Unless you're looking ar running it hard in a harsh environment the lack of those two features is WAY over-considered. For me my Sport goes from safe to car to range. It's a totally clean, carefully used environment.

For that kind of use the answer is clear IMHO: Get the Sport.

I would go with the Sport out of those two, simply because the receiver extension (buffer tube) is mil spec dimensions... more options for aftermarket stocks.

Also, the Sport is ready to fire out of the box. You will have to spend additional money on sights or optics for the DPMS.

You have a lot of choices in that price range... Ruger, Delton, Palmetto State Armory... don't limit yourself to just those two brands.

Had a pencil profile DPMS upper assembly I used on a New Frontier lower, functioned great, was accurate, about the same as any other AR I have.

Nice! Get that bad boy zero'd in, you'll be amazed at the groups you get if you do your part ;)

Thanks! I'm a huge fan of open sights. The rear MBUS is centered and the front A-2 is nice and level. I've been pleasantly surprised with how its stock trigger seems to perform. Looking forward to it. It's a sweet compliment to my beloved M&P 15-22 which has already proven itself to be another "open sight" sharpie!!

I have two DPMS Oracles, in 5.56 and .308, and they are fine rifles. I also have a 15-22, and it is a fine rifle. I have no experience with the M&P 15 Sport, but for the same price, I would take the dust cover and the forward assist, although I have never engaged the forward assist on any of my AR's . . .

I had a sport myself, loved the rifle but I got rid of it and went with a PSA build and got what I want for just about $600, which includes the free float rail and stainless steel barrel with 1:7 twist rate, got the standard Mil-spec upper and lower both PSA and even a decent set of BUIS for like $25 dollars so in all even with the sights was still at the $600+ range for a nice shooter.
I also for the money would still consider the sport if you are not really doning that much heavy shooting. But alsos the sport gets up the quality mil-spec lower so you can later add a BCM or a PSA complete barrel upper to it at anytime later and still have the sport, one lower many options for the upper and I know that the BCM and the PSA both fit the sports lower well.
