Hello there,

I currently have a M&P Shield 9mm that I use as an EDC in my pocket with a Sticky holster. I am concerned about the capacity given that gun violence is on the rise in my city. Has anyone used a M&P Compact 9mm as a pocket carry pistol?

Thanks in advance for your opinion.

A quality IWB holster would conceal a compact well. I carry a 2.0 compact 9 in a Vedder Lighttuck.

I've been pocket carrying an M&P 40c (1.0 version, 3.6" barrel) using a DeSantis Nemesis holster for nearly five years without any issues. I've converted it to a .357 SIG with a Storm Lake barrel, but whatever caliber you favor, it's always good to have double digit rounds in your EDC.

I think you'd need to be wearing cargo pants. Printing in most pants would be inevitable, and I'd be concerned about how fast you could draw a weapon that I assume would be a very tight fitting pistol. I agree with IWB, possibly with a tuckable model holster. You could also carry more of the Shield magazines and practice your reloads.

If you want something with more capacity then the compact in an IWB holster will be the way to go. If you need something more concealable but want more rounds then continue pocket carrying the Shield and start carrying more mags.

^^^ What he said. One of the primary benefits of an auto is quick reloading. If you like the gun and can shoot it and prefer pocket carry, more mags is the easy answer.

I carry my Sheild with the factory 8 round magazine with magguts +2 extension and if needed another 8 round with magguts +2 on my weak side. 21 rounds total and easily concealed with just a tshirt.

Being in a restricted state, I can't have more than 10 round mags anyway. If I could, I would probably own a P365.

I have occasionally carried my 1.0 9c in my pocket in a nylon pocket holster. Works fine in the normal pocket of Wrangler cargo shorts or long paints. The large flap of the cargo pocket helps hide the extra bulk. The cargo pocket itself is huge but a gun in there flaps around so much it can hurt. A black gun in dark denim is hard to notice even if the grip is pretty close to the top of normal the pocket. I prefer my Crossbreed OWB holster but there have been times when the pocket was a better choice.

Gun violence is not on the rise in your city (I live here too) most of the shootings are drug/gang related and are criminals shooting other criminals. In general the crime rate is up though.

I used to own a Shield and I traded it for a 9C for the same reason you're considering it and because I own an M&P9 and the magazines for it will work in a 9C.

All that said, IME a 9C is not a pocket gun unless you're wearing BDUs. I ended up selling mine and replacing it with a Glock 26 with an OEM 12 round magazine.

It's not quite a pocket gun either but it is more compact and IMO more concealable than a 9C.

If you're committed to the idea of an M&P though, a first generation 9C is (IMO) a better choice than a Shield

I pocket carry a .380 Shield EZ with a Uncle Mike's Model 36 IWB holster made for S&W
snub nose revolver. Fits perfectly with no printing at all.

I pocket carry a CZ Rami which is quite similar in size to the 2.0 subcompact or the original compact. It prints a bit, but no one has ever noticed - or at least if they have they never said anything. I have a 2.0 compact, but I wouldn't dream of trying to pocket carry that one except maybe in a big cargo pants pocket. Even if I could get it into my pocket I'd never be able to draw it in a reasonable amount of time.

I also pocket carry my Shield 9mm 1.0 with the Magguts +2. I've fired about 300 rounds with the Magguts and not a hiccup.

what kind of pants do you wear that allows you to pocket carry a CZ Rami?

i wear Wranglers and the largest pistol i can pocket carry is a Ruger Lc9 in a Vedder Pocket Locker, and that is borderline.

(respectful snip!)

Can you expand on your thinking about why the 9c V1 is a better choice?

I have a Shield 9 v1 for EDC and I've been considering the 9c as home defense weapon I can hang some lights, etc on.

I would also consider carrying the 9c as an EDC, but I am not worried about needing more bullets than the OEM 8 round magazines that comes with the Shield 9.

All opinions and suggestions welcomed.

When I say 9C in this post I am referring to the first generation 9C.

Compatibility is always been a big selling point for me. From the day I bought my shield I said it would be a perfect gun if it took an M&P FS magazine.

The thing that convinced me to trade the Shield in for the 9C was one morning (5AM) I was walking my dog and the door to my apartment building opened up and five of my neighbor's closest crackhead (that's not a euphemism they really were crackheads) friends surrounded me. They didn't have any malicious intent but it was a wake up call. I decided then and there I was never going to carry less than 10 rounds again.

When I found out the 9C was only a half inch thicker than the Shield and gave me 50% higher capacity I couldn't see any good reason not to buy it.

Capacity is an issue for me because my life experience has taught me that Tweakers hunt in packs. I say no less than ten but actually my EDC is a Glock 26 with a 12 round magazine and a Glock 19 magazine as a reload. Two Tweakers tried to rob me on my way to work one night. I wouldn't want to deal with that carrying a Shield.
