just got my first auto S&W its a MP-40 ... I have tried search and cannot find where it explains the feature abv on the box --- mine is as follows 15 - AD - LG - GP - BS - SL - SN - FP - DM - ZL... I do know this was a police issue pistol that was bought from a local police force . it has a place where a lock should go but there is no hole for a key and says on the side will fire with magazine removed.Came with proper box three mags and all three grip adjustments and all paper work and cable lock ..any info would be helpful this will make a good start to go with my four S&W revolvers THANKS

I don't know what all that secret code is, but the reason it's written that it will fire with the magazine removed is...wait for it...

because if you remove the magazine it will still fire if there's a round in the chamber!

Used to be that was assumed...before the S&W - Clinton sellout of the '90s, it didn't have to be written that an autoloader would fire with the magazine removed - it was, as a matter of design and safe gun handling, a known characteristic of autopistols (except for the Hi-Power and a select few others).

The rest of it should be self-explanatory.

You wanna know what all that hub-bub means contact the department that gave the gun up for resale. Or call Smith & Wesson - no offense, but I bet those poor operators up there field a LOT of dumb questions.

the will fire was pretty self explanatory -but thank you still -the other abbreviations are on the bar code on the side of the carrying case. The pin in the lock mechanism i guess was for the law enforcement part - just trying to figure out what other standard abvs meant

I'm thinking it's a LE thing (Law Enforcement ;)) I looked and none of my boxes have anything like you described on them. (3) The Plug for the key is pretty normal, they put them in the frames when they thought that locks were going to be required on all pistols. Mine have it too.

Is there a 6 digit SKU number above the bar code on the label? If so, do a search for that number and you should get the data you need. You may need to put S & W or M & P with that number.

Thank you -curlysir - found the meaning of the product code or sku # mine is 309700 magazine = 10 12 15 17 = mag capacity....action = AD double action only ....frame = MD med frame LG large frame .... grips = GP plastic palm swells...barrel BS= stainless barrel ....sights = SF fixed sights SN night sights SD dot sights,front and rear SL sights laser ....saftey = MS mag safety NMS no mag safety T/S thumb safety ....internal lock= IL internal lock ....overall finish ZB all black ZT two tone ZL ? ---- product codes with 1 or 2 meant two magazines ,product codes with a 3 meant law enforcement with three magazines

so mine was 15-AD-LG-BS-SL-SN -FP-DM-ZL 15 rounds- double action-large frame- all palm swells -stainless barrel -laser sights (not included) -night sights- then it gets tricky could not find the last three codes FP DM ZL --- still looking

The M&P was announced in about October 2005, and the memo from Bill Brown of S&W to S&W Authorized Dealers is dated October 10, 2005, and states that S&W is "about to launch" the new M&P.

So, I have given you the codes from the 2005 catalog (from the detachable insert in the 2005 Catalog just inside the back cover - this same chart is also printed just inside the front cover):

15 = 15 round magazine
AD = Double Action Only
LG = Frame, Large
GP = Plastic Grip
BS = Stainless
SL = Novak Low Mount Carry
SN = Night Sight
FP = Polymer Frame
DM = Stainless Melonite
ZL = Melonite

thanks shawn mccarver for clearing up the SL for me and giving my the other codes FP DM ZL
