How does one know how to tell what generation he/she may have? Someone noted in my 40 cal thread that these police trade-ins are 2.0, something I am far from knowing how to tell? Nothing on the box label or anywhere else. And does the 2.0 work better or do anything special? Sorry, but I can't really find anything , so I must ask you guys. You can make up a good lie, I like funny, but I'm pretty gullible on these things so put a sarcasm emoji in there so I know!!
Thanks!

With a typical photo, you can tell the 1.0 has much less aggressive stippling on the grip frame than the 2.0.

Right, the 2.0 lost the beavertail and gained the recesses in the dust cover and the extra bit on the slide stop to prevent "auto-close" when a fresh magazine is hard rammed into place. Grip texture is rougher.

Internally, the barrel is different to improve accuracy over the sometimes spotty first type.

That said, I am content with my "1.0" and just wish it were a Pro or L9 for a bit more sight radius.

If you did by the 40sw shown on your other tread its a first generation. There are both first gen and some 2.0's out there for sale . Price difference was 279 plus $ 299 plus . I have both and for me the difference is minimal. Both group well and are 100% reliable .

According to that picture up there I have a Gen 1. Not that I know much difference, but the gun is very easy to get a good grip on.

Just FYI, it's a video. If you like to know more about the differences, check out the video.

I recently purchased a used M&P and used the contact form on the S&W web site to get the exact model number and year of manufacture. I sent them the serial number and got a response the same day.

My M2.0 has it engraved on the slide. Is that not the case with them all?
