Just picked up a M&P cal. 40S&W test fire date 10/03/06. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for with this pistol. I am assuming it is one of the early ones. Condition is about 98%

Congratulations, you picked up a fine firearm. The only issues to look for in the early models would be the magazine drop issue and a slide rust issue.
If the slide has not started to rust by now, then yours is probably not one that is affected. The magazine drop issue is an easy fix if you experience it. S&W has a lifetime warranty and will fix it for FREE. Make sure if you ever have a mag drop out that it is not you hitting the mag release.
I've got a M&P40 with a s/n MPAxxx, so it should be in the first 10,000 produced. I have had no issues with it in the approx. 1,500 rounds through the gun except for a few failures to feed the last round from a magazine in the first 200 rounds. I assume that was a breaking in problem.
Thanks for the positive info. There is no rust on the slide and the mag looks like new, no rust. It sounds like the M&P has the same issue with fully loaded mags as does the XD's. Need a good slap to seat them. Kind of hard to avoid a flat side release when I own the gun 10MM Sonny.Again thanks for the input
I am also new to the M&P, I have a 9mm model.
Mine has no safety but does have the "disconnecter" thing that must be pushed out of the way to remove the slide. My gun will fire with the mag removed. So what model is it?
Secondly I was wondering, is it possible to switch to a 40cal barrel spring and slide and I guess mag also to change calibers.
I know Kel-tec made a gun that could be switched back and forth between calibers.
Is this possible with teh M&P?
Thanks from a real newbe
