I have a G23 and have been offered at trade for a M&P40. I really am trying to get out of .40 as I want to shoot 9 and 45. How is this pistol? I've never handled an M&P but plan to before I commit. It seems like the slide rides far back the grip, the bobtail? or whatever it's called. Looks like it might help with recoil too. I know this is a S&W website but please give unbiased replies.

Thanks

I was really hoping for an XD!! I have a 6906 and 915 too.

Well I have never shot a Glock 23 but did own a 35 for a few days. I just bought my MP40 three days ago and have not had a chance to shoot it. It feels really good in my hands is about all I can tell you! Don't know your location but I have a XD40 Service I'm trying to sell ftf in Kentucky. Good luck and I think you will love the feel of a M&P.

I'm from IN. How did you feel the grip of the Glock vs MP compared?

Shoot it and you will be hooked. I just bought a M&P 40 a few days ago, traded my H&K for it. IF you want a 45 the M&P compact is just awsome.

I personaly dont like Glocks( dont like the grip angle), but love my M&P's. Take one out for a spin, I think you'll like it.

The grip angle just enhances the feel of the M&P, dont worry about the beaver tail you wont notice it after awhile.

I think you will find the M&P feel versus a 23 is like comparing apples and oranges. It is a personal thing. Try it and compare.
All the Glocks are just that: Glocks. They are different, not better or worse, just different.
It is difficult for me to switch from Glock to any other brand and back again, and still shoot consistently.
Just my $.02 worth.

Yea i never shot the Glocks well. The M&P looks like a more ergo grip. The XD doesn't look comfortable but I'm from Croatia and the XD is made there :D

While I am a big fan of S&W, and own several of them, I carry a Glock 23C. Partially because it is a fine weapon and partially because the agency I work for mandates it (although there are ways around it). I am very found of the 23C (and G19) and much prefer it to Glock's full size offerings. The compensation tames the muzzle flip very well without any of the negative side effects that the internet commandos claim will occur. Mine has proven itself on paper, at the range, during tactical training and just out plinking. The ergonomics of the G23C leave something to be desired, but the upside more than makes up for it.

That being said, the M&P truly seems to be an excellent platform. S&W took the good from Gaston's design (no I am not saying the stole or copied anything), added some improved features and left all of the bad in Austria. The only M&P I have ever owned/shot was the full size M&P 45. It was a very capable gun and a great shooter, I just did not need another .45acp sitting in the safe. I have recently begun contemplating picking up a M&P 9C.

I truly believe that whichever way you go, you will end up with a very good handgun.

I can't decide if I should trade for the M&P. I've read they are hard to work on, although I won't be doing more than stripping it to clean it. I've also read that the triggers are like the Sigma. Is there a big aftermarket for the M&P?

Thanks

I've also read that the triggers are like the Sigma.

Thanks

No the triggers are in no way the same. The M&P is striker fired and the Sigma's are double action. The M&P trigger will be about the same as a Glock. The Sigma is like shooting a double action revolver. The Sigma's I shot were around 8-10 pounds trigger pull. The M&P I'm guessing are around 2-3 pounds.

The M&P is possibly one of the best mass produced poly pistols on the market. S&W took all the good of the other designs and got rid of all the bad too. It is well balanced, the trigger is smooth and has an excellent and predictable break on it. It's as smooth as my Model 14 in SA. The only thing that may be an issue is the grip angle. Seems there are 2 types of shooters out there. Those that like the "Glock grip angle" and those that like the Smith's and others. You need to figure out which feels better and has a more natural point of aim for YOU.
I prefer the M&P grip angle, but that's personal choice. Either can serve your needs perfectly and you can be confident that they will fire every time you need.
Your choice. Get to a gun shop and spend time with both in your hand. It won't take long for you to decide.

I shoot my 6906 and 915 much better than Glocks. Hopefully the M&P will fit me too. I'll go to Cabelas tomorrow and handle one.

Thanks

I would get the M&P. I have both Glocks in 9mm and .45 and about a year ago I bought a M&P 40. No comparison at all in the ergonomics. You can shoot 9mm in the M&P 40 if you get a conversion barrel and some magazines. My birthday(12/16) and Christmas present from my fiance were two barrels from Storm Lake in 9mm and .357 SIG for the M&P. Both calibers work great so now I have a semi automatic that can use three calibers.

I have both a G23 and an M&P40. I also have small hands and find that ability to change the grip backstrap is a big plus for me. With the small backstrap the gun fits my hand perfectly, the Glock is a little to big for me.

Also, the trigger on the M&P seems much smoother to me; this could be because the grip fits better. In any event, there is no comparison with a Sigma - the M&P is hands down superior to the Sigma in every respect except price.

One other thing to remember is that the M&P40 is a full size gun, not a compact like the G23. They do make a compact M&P40, but I don't own one so I can't really give you an opinion. It is smaller then the G23, more like a G27.

I won't be getting rid of any of my Glocks, but I can tell you that the M&P40 is a great gun with a lot going for it. I highly recommend it.

If I do get it, I see someone shaves down the beavertail. I'd like to have that done, as well as install night sights and maybe a trigger job.

Does anyone have pics of one with the shaved beavertail?

I'm issued a Glock 22. I own my own 22, 23, and 27.

I T&E’d a bunch of M&P’s in 40 and 45 when are department had them for evaluation a few months ago.

The M&P triggers where a little harder to manage than the 5.5lb Glock triggers I’m used to.

I’d rather have an M&P because neither my personally owned G23 or G22 will run reliably with lights attached. That’s why we were testing M&P’s by the way.

Kind of like you, I wish I'd never bought a 40 though, I could be very happy with 9's and 45's.

Don't do it. Not because the M&P is a bad gun, its because with my own experience, used guns isn't the way to go. Just sale your glock and get a new M&P. I also see that you have the EMT badge on your SN, you maybe able to get a discount on your M&P. I got mines for $445 with the LE discount.

Sigma's are not "double action". they are a semi pre-cocked striker design.

The differences of the M&P design versus the sigma i do not know since i've never had the chance to examine one, but if the M&P is like a glock as i suspect it is; then the designs are really quite different.
