I have a question for you guys out there who have a M&P pro. I was thinking of getting the 5" model in 9mm for IDPA. I know on my Steyr, when it is in slide lock, and I put a new mag. in, the slide automatically drops. I do not have to slingshot it. Do you have to slingshot the slide to close it when putting in a new mag, with the M&P pro?

I shoot IDPA with the standard M&P9. You can slingshot the slide or keep slight pressure with your thumb on the slide lock to chamber a round as you load the magazine. Or you can slam the magazine home. I prefer using my thumb on the slide lock method. These methods can be done to all M&P pistols.

On my Pro Core some of the mags will cause the slide lock to release when slammed in, some won't. They're always the same mags so I'm assuming it's mag related. I haven't put more than a passing thought as to why. Maybe if my times get better I will have to investigate it more thoroughly. What kills my times are the slow movement between shooting positions. With two artificial hips I just don't move fast any more. (I hate getting old)

Thanks for the replies. My thinking is the slide dropping on it's own would be a time saver. Due to a surgery I have to have later this month, I won't be able to start shooting IDPA for a couple of months. I won't be even able to drive for a few weeks. It is going to drive me crazy!!

It is a timesaver, I arrange my mags so that the mags that drop the slide are the ones that are reloads in the middle of a string. I know which mags won't drop the slide but haven't really investigated the "why". As long as it's consistent (and it has been) which mags drop the slide, I'm satisfied and IDPA rules specify no more than 2 reloads per string so I can always work it out.

I have the M&P Pro 40. If I slam the magazine home it the slide releases on its own most of the time. If it doesn't I use the slide release as I extend my arms back on target. I don't have any problem pushing the slide release on my M&P unlike my Glock I have to slingshot it. The slide release is so small on the Glock I have to rotate the pistol to reach it.

I have S&W mags and Promags for my 9mm Pro CORE 5" and they all drop the slide upon hard insert.

All 10 of my mags drop the slide on both my fs9, and my pro 5inch. It is not so much of slamming the mag home as to how you insert the mag. There is a good video out there with Travis Haley showing how to do it, i'll try to find it and post on here. But as you insert the mag you have to push it in with some force at a 45deg angle on the base of the mag.

must slingshot slide

I just read your question. I have the M&P Pro 40 cal 5" bbl. Just got it never fired it. Just now slide locked open, inserted mag and had to slingshot the slide to load the chamber. Just inserting the mag does nothing. Hope this helps.

m&p Pro question guys, I have been wanting a 5" pro for a while now, but have read a lot of mixed information on the quality and accuracy problems that have plagued the series. Can you well informed pro's help me with the proper information so I can make a sound purchase of a m&p that I have wanted for a while. Thanks for the help, Don

I've read the same reports and have wondered how I got lucky. I've been shooting a 9L Pro Core since June and have over 20,000 rounds through it without any problems. I don't shoot bullseye at 50 yards or measure my group sizes with caliper but I do shoot IDPA, USPSA, and Steel Challenge and don't have any accuracy complaints (with the pistol, now if it comes to my performance, that's up to debate;)) I have put an Apex FSS and trigger in it because I wanted a shorter trigger stroke, but that was a choice I made after using the stock trigger for a while. I also have a FS and a Compact that are completely stock and have no reliability or accuracy problems with either of them. The only negative over the past few months has been the availability of S&W magazines but that seems to be over since a number of the vendors have them in stock and they don't disappear the day they appear on the website (Quantico Tactical even has them on sale). Good luck with your choice.

Bkreutz, Thanks for the information. I have read that the first series barrels being the 1-18 have been replaced with the 1-10 helping to make for a better lockup with improved accuracy. As with most everything, if you don't know your facts your already in trouble. I have owned a few s&w in the past and have always thought highly of the company and quality of product, model 915,457,380bg and two m&p carbines. The only one i had problems with was the Bodyguard, had problems with the laser so I sent it back and two weeks later it was returned saying it was fixed. Problem was that when they sent it back it came without the laser. It was pretty funny after I got over the mistake they made. needles to say I called they sent the laser and I installed. So with the mixed information I have read I just want to know my facts so i can do my part on the purchase. Thanks again, Don

My recently purchased 40 Pro 5" has been flawless for 500 rounds of factory reloaded FMJ, Federal Hydroshok and Hornady Critical Duty. It's my house protection pistol and despite my old shaky hands easily shoots 3" fast fire groups at 7yds. It's the same overall size as a 1911, so with the right holster it carries well. Get one and have fun.
