Hello, I'm new on here and have a question for someone maybe knowledgeable on this subject. The outter spring for my guide rod came off while field stripping. I reinstalled the spring back on the rod and the pistol slides fine. But my main question is, is that normal for the spring to come off the guide rod on the shield M&P?

Howdy from South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.

Just call S&W customer service, they will send a new one. It is common enough that they don't question it.

Unfortunately, it will be the same design as the original.

The common nomenclature for the part on this forum is RSA, for Recoil Spring Assembly. If your curious about the other members this has happened to, you should search that abbreviation. The biggest problem besides the failure, is the possibility of a multi-month wait for the replacement.

I'm kinda surprised that you were able to get it back together relatively easily. It's a tough little spring. :)

If it happened once, it may indeed happen again, so you may as well give CS a call (when they reopen after the holidays) and see about getting a replacement.

Nice! definitly will do. But do people take the spring off the rod to clean and oil? Looks like the spring kinda threads on the collar.

The RSA stays in 1 piece! So you do not take it apart! Like mentioned either Call S&W or go to web site and live chat (will not have to wait on hold along time :) ) Tell them what happened and in a few weeks new RSA at NC! I purchased a spare from a vendor in a group by just to have one on hand! So far I have the stock RSA no issue

how did the outer (larger diameter) spring come off while field stripping? The entire spring came off? WOW, that is a new one. No other parts were broken?

No other parts were broken. Seems like the diameter of the end of the spring is too loose and will come of rod if spun. I was actually able to reinstall it.
