M&P Shield. Apex as Tactical or Hyve Monarch?

Which one? I understand the Apex is more complete replacement kit, but all the videos I've seen between the two makes the Hyve trigger look better. The Hyve take-up/wall looks shorter with a medium reset, compared to the Apex longer take-up/crisp break and much shorter reset. Anybody have had both? Are my eyes deceiving me? If so, what did you end up with?

Which model and caliber Shield? Manual safety? For EDC?

What are you trying to achieve with a replacement trigger?

Apex is a superior company with a wider range of solutions. I have replaced four V1 Shield triggers and other fire control parts to get superb performance. Just changing the trigger does not do all that can be done IMO. The stock trigger bar, sear, striker safety and springs all have room for improvement as a balanced package.

I'm in California. We only have the V1 shield for public purchase. 9mm, manual safety yes, and eventually EDC as I would like to apply for my CCW permit.

I'm looking for good solid performance improvement. We don't have adjustable trigger options persay but I'm in for Less take up and play, short reset for getting back on the next shot. Not necessarily concerned with it being ”smooth as butter" but I've heard others polishing components while in there. If paying double for the Apex duty/ carry kit + trigger, I'm just curious what I don't see in the action. Basically I want a trigger similar to a performance center model but since in California, it's not on it roster, we are limited to DIY solutions.

hyve accessories look cheesy. not a fan of "range toys" like that. i want something that is useful on and off the range

Hey man, I registered to this forum just to reply your question lol. I’m in california too I understand your frustration. Let me tell you the honest truth, 99% ppl stand by the apex trigger, most of ppl don’t even know Hyve makes a trigger for the shield. What you observed is true, the hyve trigger does take out more slack vs the apex trigger, that’s why you have to grind down the safety bar a bit. I went with the hyve trigger route and did my own internal polishing. The end result was a smoother, lighter trigger(took off about 10ounces from polished internals) with no slack and shorter reset for half the price of an apex kit. As a ccw gun, I don’t want it to have a 3lb trigger, now my trigger is at 6lb ish with the above mods. I’m very happy with it, you can find polishing videos on YouTube. That’s all the trust I wanted to tell you, hope you are happy with your decision.

I run Apex trigger kits in all my M&P pistols. The competition kits in my competition gun. I do not run the competition kits in the one I carry. I run the duty kit in my carry piece. However I do polish the ramp on the trigger bar, and the striker block plunger. This alone will give you a more smooth non gritty trigger pull. I've also installed the Apex enhanced triggers in them. Apex has been around quite awhile and I have had 0 performance problems with any.Good Luck!

Thanks for the heads up. That's what I was looking to hear. I ended up doing the Hyve trigger. And it's almost exactly what I want. The only thing else I could ask for is a crisp break and maybe that's something I can consider by cobbling some Apex parts from the trigger kit. But you're probably right that no one knows or cares that Hyve carries a trigger for our pistols. They receive so much negative on here but gotta say, I like the action on the Hyve much better than the Apex. Guess it's just preference.

If there's any kit you'd recommend to install to clean up the break, would love to hear which is better. Duty carry or competition? I don't want to alter the take up on my current Hyve trigger. Really like that it's almost instant to engage but still would like to improve.

By clean up the break do you mean the grittiness or the slack? For grittiness, you just polish the internals especially reshape the firing pin block, there are several tutorials on YouTube. If you want to clean up the slack there are 3 solutions.

First solution is to buy a stock sear from Midwest for around 5 bucks and file down the part where the trigger lope makes contact with the sear so it engages at a later state. If you are handy and have time to tweak around this might be the cheapest way. Even if you **** up you still got your original sear.

Second solution is just to buy an apex sear ($40ish), but it will drop the trigger pull weight to around 4lbs without their stronger springs in the kit. For a carry gun that’s too light for my liking.

Third and the best solution for me was to buy a shield performance center sear($18). It looks very similar to the apex sear, but the sear face where it makes contact with the striker face is not as flat. you will get a little over 5lbs trigger with the performance sear and with the firing pin block polished and rounded off.

Hey @mike101 Exactly what I was looking for. Trying to reduce the slack for a little more positive engagement(I don't know what to call it). It's probably such a minute difference but enough that I'll take it. I'll try the performance center sear to drop in. Thanks for the help!

james, sorry I'm not on this site as a lot lately, but here is a link to a company Mcarbo they have some great videos on polishing parts on the M&P's I did get the spring kit and install it on one of my gen 1 Shields and it dropped the pull to a clean 4.0 lbs, with the Apex enhanced trigger (shoe only)Custom Smith and Wesson Shield Trigger Job - Smith and Wesson M&P Trigger Spring Kit 1.0 & 2.0 - 9mm | .357 | .40 cal | .45 ACP

Good videos for the info, they are long but worth the watch.

@chillydog thanks for the links and summary. The spring kit sounds reasonable. I will go thru and polish what I can. Didn't realize so many of the parts needed cleaning up and a reasonable spring kit.

@mike101 appreciate the links. The pdf helps immensely. I lost out on the performance sear. Someone else must have bought it out from under me. Will try to custom grind and polish method!
