I sold my Shield and I learned from the guy today that he sent it to SW because he shot 300 rounds thru it and the roll pin was over half way out again. I really miss the idea of that gun but I replaced it with a nano and while the trigger is terrible it has many rounds thru it and has been perfect. Maybe I will get another shield one day but oh well. I did get $650 for it so I cant complain. The gun just had to many issues before 500 rounds to ignore. Oh well:(

Thought you were looking xDs?

Was your Shield a 40? Is the Nano a 40 or 9?

Wasn't the pin issue due to a bad batch from a supplier? If so I would think it would be an easy fix for Smith no?

Had a problem with the locking block roll pin on my MP45 working out. A dab of blue locktite on and in the pin channel solved the problem.

I bought two new Shields that were manufactured in the end of January. I haven't fired them yet, but hope they are past the various issues I've been reading about.

I would never buy a used Shield, or at least not one that doens't have proof of manufactured date.

Funny I purchased a Nano when it was first released serial # 1,1xx shot 1, 300 rounds of assorted ammo (6 different brands) and every 115 grain failed to extract (FTE) anywhere from a rate of .8 to 2% of the time.

Federal Champion from Walmart back in the days when you could actually buy it was the worse for my Nano and from a power factor (mass x velocity/1000) rated the lowest among all major brands. 115 grain x 1125 fps ÷ 1, 000 = 129. However the Nano also failed with S&B 115 grain which was at the other end of the power factor scale at I believe 143.

Fast forward to my Shield which I have owned since April 2012 and 800 rounds of mostly the lowest power factor on the market (Federal Champion) and the results have been zero failures and to add to the impressive results of my Shield I have had two shooters try out my Shield with zero handgun experience and both shot with zero failures despite obvious beginner mistakes like improper gripping. (One shooter held the Shield so low they experienced soreness for days in their wrist)

Handguns are mechanical tools with moving parts and failures can occur but I still believe statistically speaking from observing large numbers of reports from both weapons the Shield is more reliable.

P.S. I forgot to mention at the 600 round count I sent my Nano back to Beretta. They polished the feed ramp and chamber but upon return the next 700 rounds had no change statistically in the failure rate. It was like a fine watch. I could count on 2 failures from every box of Federal Champion and 1 for every box of S&B and Winchester white box.

Limp wrist can also be ruled out because I handle all my weapons with two hands and my technique is the same for my Shield as it was with the Nano.

I don't think Berettas like the Federal Champion. My buddy has a PX4 and it chokes on it. Any other ammo is fine but it is allergic to the FC

He gave the 30 remaining rounds to me as my Shield eats it like candy :)

I still want a XDs but finding the gun is hard. The nano has been good so far and most of what I have shot has been federal range 115gr. I did buy a Glock 36 but I think I may get a full size M&P. I am sure my old shield will be a good gun but it just didnt work for me. I dont look bad at SW it is a mass produced object and some will have problems

Well I see that you are over on xd talk as well so you've seen some of the banter about issues with the xds.

I really like the gun. I had quite a few FTF my first 200 rounds but my last time out was after a Frog Lube treatment. I also adopted a stronger isosceles stance and had zero issues at all with 100 rounds

Excellent trigger, unbelievable recoil management for such a tiny 45 and dead on accurate. You do need to be aggressive with it as far as no babying it or limp wristing. You do your part and the xds will reward yah

I have read alot about FTF and light primer strikes with the XDS

Hope you enjoy your Nano, but since I am a big Beretta fan and member of the Beretta forum, I can assure you that there were MANY reports of Nano's choking on certain types of ammo and requiring SEVERAL trips back to Beretta to fix them. Beretta doesn't offer the same excellent customer service and warranty and new Beretta's are only warrantied for one year, and the buyer pays shipping, unlike S&W lifetime warranty with NO cost to you. If i was hedging my bets between a Nano and a Shield, the Nano wouldn't even be close. I especially hate that the Nano has no slide stop on it.

I bought my Nano from Shooters World in Tampa FL and they over a in house lifetime warranty on the Nano. So if something does happen I just have to drop it off on my way to work. I made sure and got it in writting as well:cool:

A warranty is only good if a company remains in business.

I would hope as busy as they are they are making enough money to make it but I understand what you are saying but maybe the good ole us goverment will bail them out if they get in trouble to save my warranty.:D

Ocracoker, I'm sorry your Shield didn't work out for you. You certainly gave it every opportunity to do so. Sometimes, we gotta do what we gotta do. Hope you enjoy your Kahr, and better yet, that it provides you the reliability you need in a CC weapon, whatever the brand.

Roll pins are funny critters. From many years of machine-shop experience, I know that they can be kinda particular about the size of the hole they're made to fit. The right size hole, they're golden and won't budge at all. That same hole, if it's a few thousandths too large, is problematical, even though roll pins are designed to expand (and, thus, to be tight in the hole they fit.)

If S&W, in the process of manufacturing thousands upon thousands of Shields, had a bit of "run-out" in the drills used for the roll-pin holes, some of the holes could have been enough out of tolerance that the roll pins would be loose enough to start working themselves out under the impact of rounds fired. Just an opinion, of course, but I think it is an informed one....

But it's not only aggravating, it's also a structural-integrity question, if a roll pin works its way out regularly. I don't blame you for not putting up with that.

Good shooting to you. Be safe, and again, hope your Kahr proves to be reliable and trouble-free.

Good luck with your Nano. I had one of the ealy one and it had to go back to BUSA 3 times and still wasn't fixed. I sold it to Martin who is the BerettaForum admin. Not sure what luck he had with it, but I had failures will all ammo types. I could see the extractor was barely grabbing on to the case rim and I'd end up with a double feed. Very hard to clear without a slide release.

Fast forward, 3 Shields 2 in 9mm and one in .40 with over 4k total rounds throu all, including 700 through the .40 and not a single malfunction.

I took the Nano yesterday to a friends house and we ran so many kinds of ammo thru it and alot of it. It was 480 rounds and that is 80 magizines. We all have sore thumbs but the Nano ran perfect but I think I would rather drive the roll pin back in the Shield every 50 rounds than deal with the Nano's hideous trigger, Something has to be done about the trigger. It breaks just before you think it is out of travel

I thought the same thing about the trigger travel with my friends PX4. I have a 11 year old Beretta 92G Elite Brigadier and I don't recall the trigger being that bad.
