Im thinking about an M&P either a 9mm or a .40 my question is should I "jump in the water is great" or should I wait a year to see if there are other problems/issues that S&W needs to iron out? I was reading the M&P forum and to be honest I dont get all warm and fuzzy when I read some of the problems people have with there M&P.

By the way is there much recoil diff between the 9mm and the .40 in an M&P?

I have not heard of any problems. My M&P 45 compact functions absolutely perfectly. Fit and finish is outstanding.
Jump in, the water is fine

Water's fine here. I have a 9mm compact and it has performed flawlessly. I believe the few problems were associated with the earlier production models and those problems have been ironed out. Mine had a fired casing dated mid-2008 and I haven't had any problems whatsoever.

I purchased the M&P9Pro which has been a reliable performer. If you should have aproblem S&W's customer service is excellent.

I've had my 9 and 9c for about a year. Both have been flawless. As moonshinew pointed out, problems with earlier ones have been iron out. Problems with shooters have not (ie, limp wristing, thumb interfering with slide release, not seating the mag).

I held out for 20+ years on ownership of a "plastic fantastic". I was a very tough sell on the frame material. Coupled with them being made off shore. S&W took both of those excuses away and improved on the ergonomics of the others as well. That's a trifecta in anybody's book. The product was impressive enough to cause me to go with one in 9 MM, even though after 45 years shooting my never having owned one. So, if it's not an economic issue you could do far worse?

I have the M&P Compact .40 and it is one of the nicest guns i have ever owned. You can't go wrong with the M&P series.

My two have been perfect. I went through a two week SWAT school with my FS 40.

Everybody makes lemons. Smith doesn't have any more problems w/ the M & P than Glock has had. You just hear more about it nowadays with 'net and all. If you like the ergos of the Smith, go for it.

I had a few problems with my new M&P 9 when I first got it, ejection rounds in my face, double feeds, and stovepipes. But after about 200 rounds or so they all went away and it's been reliable since then. I'd certainly buy it again if I had a choice.

I have both the 9mm and the 40 M&P and love them both. I have had them for several years now and carry one as a duty gun and the other for conceal and carry and trust them both.

No reason to wait. I love my .40. I haven't tried one in 9mm but the recoil is not bad at all in the .40.

I've had several and traded them away (forgive me, I lost my mind for awhile). I now have a compact .45 and will be getting another .40 in the near future.

my Full Size M&P 40 has over 10,000 rounds down range and has yet to bobble on ANYTHING! It feeds everything, ejects everything, is accurate and reliable. The best trigger/action job in the world is the one I gave it....one round at a time and it keeps on getting better and better. It is my main match gun for USPSA and IDPA which is why it has so many rounds......buy it as soon as you can and then shoot the heck out of it, dry fire it even more and you will have not only have a great trigger, but you own skill will undoubtedly improve as well! How can you lose in that equation?

I belong to the M&P forum as well and I have noticed a trend of late that I can only conclude is very Troll-like. It seems that other-brand fanatics come and post a wild claim or complaint about their M&P, only to leave and never be heard from again.

I currently own four M&Ps and have exactly zero issues in hundreds to thousands of fired rounds on each. I am also comforted in the knowledge that Smith & Wesson is backing my M&Ps with a lifetime warranty, so I just don't sweat it.

I hope that you reconsider purchasing an M&P and help the U.S. economy at the same time. Remember that most of the M&P competitors are owned and/or manufactured by foreign companies.

To answer one of your questions, yes the 40 M&P has more recoil than a 9mm. In my experience the 40 S&W is a snappy caliber.

The only trouble that I've experienced with my M&P9 and M&P40 occurred in the first few magazines and I attribute it just breaking in the mags. In all instances it was a failure to feed the last round from a mag. For the last 3000 rounds (between the two) no failures of any kind.

Also my M&P40 has a very low serial number and I have not experienced any finish, rusting or mag drop problems.

I think that the M&Ps are the best polymer frame guns out there and they are made in the USA.

I can concur with everything being said here. My M&P.45 is the most accurate and dependable gun I own. I also own a 4506 an a Springfield Mil-Spec, the springer is accurate and not reliable and the 4506 is reliable and not accurate, I love all three but the M&P is the best of the lot.

My M&P 9c has worked flawlessly since new. Fires everytime, handles and shoots on target. Woody

I've got an M&P40, full size, and a Springfield XD9SC. Both are just fine.... I did have issues with the sights on the M&P, and re-installing them was a lot more work than I should have invested (v.s. just asking S&W to fix it), but I'm enough of a tinkerer....

I almost bought a compact .40 yesterday, but ended up with a Walther PPS. Just seemed closer to what I wanted. Downside of that deal is no free magazines

....

As Maxwell Smart would put it, "it was THIS close"....

(Did I mention that I like the M&P?
