I currently have the M&P 15OR Optic Ready that I bought 3 years ago and wanna know the difference in these 2 models. My buddy was looking at the M&P Sport II and wants to buy it, but we both wanna know what the difference is? Why is the M&P 15OR model $2-300 more than the Sport II?? I've tried researching but really can't pin-point the reasons for the price differences and what's better etc. Any info you can provide me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The main difference is the railed gas block instead of the A2 front sight post and the M4 cut barrel, but the OR has no sights included with it at all. I believe the rest is pretty much the same.

Now why does that make the rifle $200 or so more? You got me. When the Sport I was around the OR had the differences of the dust cover and forward assist, but now the Sport II has those features. Bottom line? I guess the front gas block and M4 barrel are more expensive to supply. Maybe I'm missing something?

Edit: I forgot about the trigger guard and chrome lined barrel. The Sport has a built in trigger guard, the OR has a removable and the OR has a chrome lined barrel. I guess add all that stuff up and you get the price difference??

S&W is notoriously bad about listing the features on their rifles.

Reading a couple vendor listings... the OR has a "Chromed Barrel Bore, Gas Key, Bolt Carrier, Chamber". Of course the railed gas block instead of the A2 front sight which provides heartburn to countless Sport owners. Take a look at the OR lower and see if it has a standard hinged trigger guard. That's about all I can come up with...

If you are truly interested, I'd try calling S&W and ask because what's available in print is at best unreliable.

See: All Firearms | Smith & Wesson

This will allow you to narrow down your selection to the M&P Brand and Modern Sporting Rifles. From there you will get a list of models and if you click on each, you will get a clear list of the relevant features; including the fact that the OR model has a chrome-lined barrel, which the Sport II does not.
